Okasaki Earns Spot In NCAA Regional Field

INDIANAPOLIS - After a successful junior campaign in 2009-10, Keith Okasaki will represent the UC San Diego men's golf team in the NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championships, it was announced Friday. Okasaki will be one of eight individuals competing in the Central/West Regional May 3-5 at the Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif.

Okasaki advances to postseason play for the second year in a row after leading the Tritons with 26 rounds played and a stroke average of 75.2 this season. His highest finish of the year came back in October when he shot a +1, 145 to claim a share of eighth place at the rain-shortened Sonoma State Invitational. He finished even at the Grand Canyon Thunderbird Invitational in March, which was tied for 21st place individually.

A native of Sacramento, Okasaki will join Ryan Indovina and Cavin McCall of Cal State Dominguez Hills and Ryan Sheffer of Notre Dame de Namur as the four individuals to represent the West Region in Palm Desert.

A total of five teams from the California Collegiate Athletic Association were named to the 10-team West Regional field, including Chico State, Cal State Stanislaus, conference champion Cal State Monterey Bay, defending national champion Sonoma State, and Cal State San Bernardino. Western Washington, Dixie State, Hawaii Hilo and St. Martins will join Pacific West Conference Champion Grand Canyon to round out the field.

Cal State San Bernardino will serve as the host institution for the Central/West Regional site.

The top five teams and the top two individuals from each regional will advance to the finals May 18-21 at the Sagamore Club in Noblesville, Ind. The finals will be hosted by the Indiana Sports Corporation, the University of Indianapolis, the Great Lakes Valley Conference, and the Hamilton County Sports Authority.

Okasaki was one of three individuals to qualify for regional competition in 2009, finishing tied for 31st at +13 at the Wilderness Golf Course in Lincoln, Neb. Raj Samra finished 71st overall at 20-over par, while Billy Olsen was +25, claiming a share of 89th place.
