LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 2010 Triton Invitational got underway Friday with the invitational sections for the women's hammer throw and discus and the open sections in the pole vault. UC San Diego had several student-athletes competing on the opening day of competition at the Triton Track and Field Stadium.
Senior Eric Musker's performance in the pole vault was the big highlight for UC San Diego, as the Roseville, Calif. set a new personal record in the event with a leap of 15'2.25". He finished third overall behind Robbie Haynie of Mesa Community College (16') and David Freund of Cal State San Marcos (15'8.25"). Musker's mark is the 10th-best in program history.
Justin Rovin, UCSD's other competitor in the vault, finished in five-way tie for fourth at 14'2.5".
Senior Lyndly Tamura finished fourth in the women's pole vault, clearing 11'1.75", while Rachel Tears' mark of 10'8" was good enough for seventh.
Marie Archer, Karla Spence, and Uchenna Agbahiwe were all competing in the women's discus throw against an elite field that featured several Division I athletes. Archer (123'10") finished 24th, while Spence (119'9") and Agbahiwe (118') placed 26th and 27th, respectively.
UCSD had four student-athletes competing in the women's hammer, with Archer leading the way with a ninth-place toss of 168'6". Spence finished 27th (141'8"), Shana Emile placed 29th (137'), and Jennifer Cheng was 34th (114').
The Triton Invitational will continue on Saturday with field events starting at 10:00 a.m. and track events scheduled to begin at 11:00.
