GOLD RIVER, Calif. - UC San Diego women's crew put together three strong races Sunday during the final day of competition at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships.
Of the three boats racing Sunday for the Tritons, the varsity eight placed third in the petite final for the 12th overall position, the second varsity eight finished third in its race and the second novice eight secured sixth place.
"At the end of the day, you can only really ask your athletes to perform the best they can," UCSD head coach Pattie Pinkerton said. "Everyone put it all out there today and I'm really pleased with how the team did today."
After showing her versatility Saturday by rowing in five different races, Tritons' senior Brianna Patterson earned a spot on the All-WIRA Second Team for her performances this weekend.
The varsity eight finished its race Sunday with a third-place time of 7:41, not far behind first-place Colorado (7:36) and second-place Sonoma State (7:39).
The second varsity eight captured third place as well Sunday, crossing the line at 8:01.9 as the Tritons trailed Williamette (7:36.4) and Humboldt State (7:56.1).
UCSD will return to Gold River on May 15 for the Pacific Coast Rowing Championships, a competition that features Western Washington as one of the Tritons' opponents. WWU has made nine straight trips to nationals and has won the last five team and varsity eight national championships.
