O'Brien, Gregorich, Rossman Earn Top CCAA Awards; 10 Tritons Named All-Conference

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - The No. 1 ranked UC San Diego baseball team placed a conference-high 10 student-athletes on the California Collegiate Athletic Association All-Conference Team, it was announced by the conference office on Wednesday. Head coach Dan O'Brien was named CCAA Coach of the Year, while Brandon Gregorich was named Player of the Year and teammate Matt Rossman won CCAA Pitcher of the Year honors. Also earning All-Conference honors for UCSD included Aaron Bauman, Kyle Saul, Vance Albitz, Tim Shibuya, Kirby St. John, Kellen Lee, Evan Kehoe and Grant Bauer.

The 10 student-athletes represents the most ever by a UCSD team, surpassing the eight student-athletes named to the team in 2009. The 2010 Tritons finished the regular season with a 35-5 conference record.

O'Brien, who earned his 400th career victory last week, earns his second consecutive CCAA Coach of the Year award. In 2009, O'Brien was also named the NCBWA National Coach of the Year, while also taking home ABCA/Rawlings West Region Coach of the Year.

In 2010, O'Brien has led the Tritons to a 45-6 overall record and a 35-5 conference record. The Tritons have now been ranked No. 1 in the nation for three weeks this season.

Gregorich is UCSD's first-ever CCAA Player of the Year. The senior from Oakley is having a record breaking season. Gregroich is hitting .468 with 87 hits, 24 doubles and 75 RBI, all UCSD single-season records. He has a shot at breaking the CCAA single-season mark for batting average (.476 by Art Preston of San Diego State, 1952) and the CCAA mark for RBI (82, Mike Richardson of Sonoma State, 2001).

Rossman earns UCSD's first-ever CCAA Pitcher of the Year award. The senior right-hander is 9-0 with a 2.10 ERA. Rossman has pitched 85.2 innings, allowed 71 hits, walked 20 and struck out 60. He has given up just 13 extra base hits this year and holds opponents to a .233 average.

Bauman led the CCAA in on-base percentage and is ranked No. 6 in the nation with his .576 on-base percentage. He is hitting .426 with 69 hits, 16 doubles and seven homeruns. He has added 39 RBI and 35 walks.

Saul is seeing his first full season of action and earned All-CCAA honors. Saul is hitting .403 this season and enters the week second on the team with 121 total bases. He has hit 15 doubles, four triples and seven homeruns to go along with his 49 RBI. He also has a strong arm in right field with four assists this season.

Albitz was named to the All-CCAA team for the fourth-consecutive season. The senior shortstop is the UCSD and CCAA all-time career hits leader. Albitz enters the CCAA tournament with 317 career hits. That total is the ninth highest mark in NCAA D-II history. Albitz is hitting .360 with a .421 on-base percentage and a team-leading 64 runs scored. He also owns a .989 fielding percentage.

Shibuya earns his third All-CCAA award in as many years. The junior right-hander leads the CCAA with his 2.06 ERA and 10-2 record. Shibuya has thrown four complete-games (9-inning variety) and holds opponents to a .251 average. In 96 innings, Shibuya has given up 88 hits, 22 earned runs and struck out 63.

St. John returns to the All-CCAA team after earning second-team honors in 2008. St. John is tied for the team lead in wins with his 10-1 mark. The four-year letterwinner has a 4.04 ERA and has allowed 32 earned runs in 71.1 innings.

Lee earns his first All-Conference award. In his second season with the Tritons, Lee is hitting at a .421 clip with nine doubles and seven homeruns. He has also added eight stolen bases and has allowed only seven stolen bases behind the plate.

Kehoe earns his third consecutive All-CCAA award, with the previous two coming at the outfield position. This year at third base, Kehoe is hitting .364 with 17 doubles and is tied for the team lead with seven homeruns. He is also third on the team with 115 total bases and second with 51 RBI.

Bauer earns his first all-conference honor after hitting .333 overall and .360 in conference play. He has also helped anchor UCSD's No. 1 ranked defense with only one error this season. Bauer has a .402 on-base percentage and a .993 fielding percentage at second base.
