LA JOLLA, Calif. - UC San Diego's
Stephanie LeFever leads the women's heptathlon after the opening day of the 2010 California Collegiate Athletic Association Track and Field Championships being held at the Triton Track and Field Stadium. LeFever finished first in three of four events on Thursday for a total of 3,121 points.
A junior from Aptos, Calif., LeFever currently holds a narrow 128-point lead over teammate Linda Rainwater and Cal State L.A.'s Jamilah St. Cyr, who are tied for second with 2,993 points.
LeFever started the day with a bang, posting the top time in the 100-meter hurdles at 14.40. Her performance was good enough for a provisional qualifier in the event and eclipsed her previous best of 14.44. She went on the win the high jump and 200-meter dash as well, turning in lifetime bests of 5'5.75" and 26.01, respectively.
LeFever finished fourth in the other event of the day, recording a mark of 35'6.5" in the shot put.
Rainwater, who won the CCAA title in the heptathlon at Chico State last season, finished tied for first in the high jump after matching LeFever's mark of 5'5.75". She placed second in the shot put (37'4.5"), third in the 100 hurdles (14.86), and seventh in the 200 (27.22).
The Goleta, Calif. native set the school record in the hep after racking up 5,333 points at the Mt. SAC/California Invitational earlier this season.
St. Cyr won the shot put with a toss of 45'8" and placed second in the 100 hurdles at 14.79.
J. Patrick Smith leads four competitors from Chico State atop the decathlon standings after placing first in three of day's five events. He holds a 190-point advantage over teammate Talor Fulfer with a first day total of 3,686. UCSD does not have an entrant in the decathlon.
The heptathlon will conclude on Friday with the long jump at 10:00 a.m., followed by the javelin at 11:15 and the 800 meters at 12:15. The field events will get underway at noon, while the running events are scheduled to begin at 1:30.
