UCSD In Second On Both Sides After Second Day of CCAA Championships

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's and women's track and field teams are both sitting in second place following the second day of competition at the 2010 California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships.

Competing on their home track, the Triton women scored a total of 52 points in five events on Friday and currently trail Chico State by just six points heading into the final day of competition. UCSD holds a 19-point edge over third place Cal State L.A., while San Francisco State is fourth with 27. Cal Poly Pomona (15), Humboldt State (9), and Cal State Stanislaus (1) round out the bottom three spots in the standings.

The men's competition isn't nearly as tight, as six-time defending champion Chico State is eyeing another conference crown with 71 points two days in. The Triton men are second with 36 points, while Cal State Stanislaus is third with 30 and Cal State L.A. has 20 points for fourth place. Humboldt State and Cal Poly Pomona are tied for fifth with 19 points apiece.

After posting top marks in three out of four heptathlon events on Friday, junior Stephanie LeFever finished the job Saturday, winning the competition with a total of 5,161 points. She placed first in the long jump at 18'10" and third in the 800 with a time of 2:25.81 to secure her first victory in the event.

LeFever beat out teammate Linda Rainwater, who finished with a second place total of 4,938 points. The defending conference champion and school record holder in the heptathlon, Rainwater took second in the 800 at 2:20.00 and third in the javelin with a toss of 114'7".

UCSD claimed the top two spots in the women's long jump, as LeFever and Leah Murphy finished first and second, respectively. After winning the heptathlon long jump earlier in the day, LeFever added a half-inch to her previous mark to win the finals of the event. Murphy was not far behind, landing at 18'8.5".

The Tritons' other victory on the day came in the women's javelin, as Theresa Richards beat out the field with a strong effort. The junior thrower recorded a winning mark of 142'7", two weeks after setting the school record in the event with a toss of 149'9".

Fred Cook had a great day for the Triton men, finishing second in both the hammer throw and the shot put. He recorded a toss of 176'8" in the hammer and then hit 52'8.75" in the shot, which improved his NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the event.

Teammate Jason Jackson also made the podium in the hammer, finishing third with a mark of 161'8".

The CCAA Championships will conclude Saturday beginning with the women's hammer throw at 11:00 a.m. UCSD will be looking to score big points on the track starting at 1:00 p.m. after recording several top times in preliminaries on Friday. Senior Christine Merrill finished first in both the 100 and 400-meter hurdles and the 400, while junior Kelly Fogarty had the top times in both the 100 and 200.

One the men's side, senior Leon Baham earned a top-teed seed in the 110 and 400-meter hurdles, while Daniel Anderson finished second in the 800.
