No. 1 UC San Diego Faces Hawaii Pacific In NCAA West Regional In Compton

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The No. 1 ranked UC San Diego baseball team earned the NCAA West Regional No. 1 seed, it was announced on Sunday night in Indianapolis. The four-team NCAA West Regional will take place at the MLB Urban Youth Academy in Compton, hosted by the No. 2 seeded Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros. The Tritons will take on No. 4 seed Hawaii Pacific, champions out of the Pacific West Conference. First pitch will be on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. in Compton. Cal State Dominguez Hills faces No. 3 seeded Chico State at 6:00 p.m. in the second game of the double-elimination tournament.

The winner of the NCAA West Regional will advance to Cary, North Carolina to participate in the eight-team NCAA National Finals tournament.

Last week the Tritons earned the California Collegiate Athletic Association's automatic berth into the NCAA West Regional after defeating Cal State Dominguez Hills in the conference tournament championship game.

The CCAA is well represented taking three of the four postseason spots in the NCAA West Regional.

UCSD has not faced Hawaii Pacific since 2007. During the 2007 season, HPU visited Triton Ballpark and took 2-of-4 from the Tritons.

The Tritons are familiar with the other two CCAA opponents in the tournament, having faced Chico State five times, leading 3-2 in 2010, and having faced CSUDH seven times this year, holding a 6-1 advantage.

The Tritons have been ranked as high as No. 1 in the region over the course of the last three seasons, including twice entering the NCAA West Regional in each of the last two years. UCSD has never hosted the event because the NCAA mandates that to host a championship, the facility must have lights.

While CSUDH is hosting the event, the field is considered a neutral field, as the Toros play their home games at Toro Field on the CSUDH campus.
