INDIANAPOLIS - A total of nine women and four men will represent UC San Diego at the 2010 NCAA Division II Track and Field Championships, it was announced Wednesday. The Championships will be held May 27-29 at the Irwin Belk Track Complex on the campus of Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina.
After claiming Athlete of the Meet honors for the second consecutive season at the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships earlier this month, senior Christine Merrill will be competing in four events for the Tritons. The Bakersfield, Calif. native will take part in both hurdle events, while also running in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.
Merrill is the ninth seed in the 100-meter hurdles at 13.84, while her time of 58.92 was good enough for the second seed in the 400 hurdles. She won the national championship in the longer event last season, posting a time of 58.59 in San Angelo, Texas.
Senior Kelly Fogarty will also represent UCSD in four events, competing in the 100 and 200, as well as both relay events. Fogarty will be seeded ninth in both sprint events with times of 11.74 and 23.97 in the 100 and 200, respectively. She set the school record in both events earlier this season.
Junior Stephanie LeFever will also be busy for the Triton women. After recording victories in the heptathlon and long jump at the CCAA Championships, she will compete in both events in Charlotte. With 5,193 points, LeFever is seeded sixth in the heptathlon and her mark of 19'10.75" has her listed as the fifth seed in the long jump. She will also run a leg in the 4x400 relay.
Joining Merrill and Fogarty in the 4x100 will be Kathleen Hitchens and Jacqueline Rose. The unit is seeded ninth at 46.47. Rose will also run in the 4x400, completing a foursome that enters the competition as the sixth seed with a time of 3:45.27.
Senior Linda Rainwater will look to repeat as national champion in the high jump after winning the event with a mark of 5'9.75" in 2009. She set the school record with a leap of 5'10.5" this season and heads to Charlotte as one of two top seeds in the event.
Theresa Richards, Donna LeFever, and Marie Archer will also be making the trip after solid campaigns in 2010. Richards will be competing in the javelin as the seventh seed (149'9"), while LeFever is the 10th seed in the pole vault (12'5.5") and Archer is seeded 15th in the hammer throw (171'11").
On the men's side, senior Casey Ryan will enter the high jump as the top seed after setting a school record with a mark of 7'3.25" at the Point Loma Invitational in March. He holds the national lead in the event by nearly three inches.
Sophomore Nick Howe, another school record holder, heads to Charlotte as the third-ranked competitor in the javelin with a season-best mark of 220'6". He set the program standard with that toss at the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invite in April.
Leon Baham will be competing in the 400-meter hurdles for the second straight season after winning the event at the CCAA Championships two weeks ago. He is seeded sixth with a time of 52.18.
Lastly, Daniel Anderson will be the lone representative from the Triton distance squad, competing in the 800. He set the school record in the event with a time of 1:50.56 at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational and will be seeded eighth at the NCAAs.
Ryan, Baham, and Howe were UCSD's three representatives on the men's side at the national meet last year.
