CARY, N.C. - The No. 1 ranked UC San Diego baseball team had six student-athletes named to the ABCA/Rawlings All-American team, it was announced on Monday. The Tritons, who only had four student-athletes in program history earn All-American honors, had
Vance Albitz,
Brandon Gregorich,
Tim Shibuya,
Kellen Lee,
Kyle Saul and
Matt Rossman selected to the All-American team. UCSD also had two National Gold Glove Award winners in Albitz and Lee. This is Albitz' third-ever Gold Glove and second consecutive Nationa Defensive Player of the Year award.
The only other Tritons to ever earn ABCA/Rawlings D-II All-American honors includes Albitz (2009), Keith Noe (2008), Matt Cantele (2007) and Matt Lawson (2007).
Albitz earns ABCA/Rawlings first-team All-American honors and his second consecutive National Defensive Player of the Year award. Albitz also earned second-team Daktronics All-American honors. Albitz has 90 hits in 2010, a personal career-high. The senior shortstop enters the week with 326 career hits which is seventh in NCAA D-II history. The 2009 defensive Player of the Year has stepped up his defense in his senior season. Albitz has a .984 fielding percentage with just five errors at the shortstop position. He is also hitting at a .342 clip with an on-base percentage of .404. Albitz has also earned CCAA All-Conference and Daktronics All-West region awards in 2010.
Gregorich earns his first ABCA/Rawlings All-American award. Also named a Daktronics All-American, Gregorich has already been honored as the California Collegiate Athletic Association Player of the Year, Daktronics West Region Player of the Year and NCBWA first-team and All-West Region Player of the Year honors. Gregorich enters the national finals with a .465 average, 99 hits, 29 doubles and 84 RBI.
Shibuya, who also earned Daktronics second-team All-American honors, earns ABCA/Rawlings first-team All-American honors. He has also earned NCBWA first-team honors along with his All-CCAA and Daktronics All-West Region awards. With two postseason wins in the CCAA and NCAA West Regional, the junior has been named to both all-tournament squads. In 2010, Shibuya has a single-season school record of 13 wins and a 1.95 ERA. In 119.0 innings, Shibuya has 75 strikeouts and holds opponents to a .247 average.
Lee has now been named to the ABCA/Rawlings All-American, NCBWA West Region, CCAA and Daktronics West Region teams. This is his first Daktronics All-American award, taking home second-team honors. Lee is second on the Tritons with his .421 average, along with eight homeruns, 12 doubles and nine stolen bases. Lee is also a force behind the plate, as the junior catcher has only allowed nine stolen bases and thrown out four potential base stealers.
Saul earns ABCA/Rawlings All-American honors as he has 145 total bases, which is second on the team. Saul is hitting .421 with six triples, seven homeruns, 21 doubles and 92 hits. He was named to NCAA West Regional tournament MVP and All-CCAA.
Rossman's ABCA/Rawlings third-team All-American award also adds to a list of accomplishments. Rossman has earned Daktronics All-American, NCBWA West Region Pitcher of the Year, CCAA Pitcher of the Year and Daktronics West Region Pitcher of the Year honors. The senior right-hander is 9-0 with a 2.45 ERA. Rossman has tossed two complete games and opponents are hitting .229 against him. In 99.1 innings, Rossman has struck out 70 and has given up just 18 extra base hits.
