Rossman Leads UCSD To 2-1 Victory Over No. 3 Central Missouri With Dominant 11-Inning Performance

CARY, N.C. - If Monday night marked Matt Rossman's final appearance as a Triton, then he saved his best for last.

The senior right-hander took a no-hitter into the eighth and allowed a total of just two hits in 11 complete innings, leading No. 1 UC San Diego to a 2-1 extra-inning victory over No. 3 Central Missouri in the second round of the NCAA Championship Finals on Monday night at the USA Baseball National Training complex in Cary, N.C.

Danny Susdorf had three hits, while Kellen Lee went 2-for-5 and drove in the winning run, as the Tritons recorded their second one-run triumph in three nights.

UCSD, now 53-7 on the season, advances to the National Championship Semifinals beginning on Thursday. The Tritons will face the team that emerges from the loser's side of Bracket Two at 7:00 p.m. local time (4:00 p.m. PT).

Central Missouri, the winningest college baseball program at any level over the last decade, falls to 52-10 overall with the loss. The Mules will face Georgia College & State in an elimination game Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. ET.

"I'm excited about going to the semifinals, but right now all I can talk about is the courageous outing that Matt Rossman just gave us," head coach Dan O'Brien said. "He's a senior, he's a veteran, he's our team captain, but most importantly, he's a flat out winner."

And winner he was. When the night was said and done, Rossman had thrown his third complete game of the season -- his last came on March 26 -- and struck out a career-best 12 batters. He allowed just two walks and retired 34 of the 37 batters he faced, coming within six outs of the seventh no-hitter NCAA Tournament history.

"I felt good and I had three pitches going today," he said. "My change-up was extra effective and the cutter got me through the last four or five innings. I was keeping it down and they couldn't hit it."

After walking the leadoff batter to start the game, Rossman proceeded to retire the next 21 batters in order, staking UCSD to a 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Aaron Bauman in the top of the eighth inning.

Grant Bauer, the hero in Saturday's 3-2 win over Georgia College, scored the go-ahead run after bunting for a single and advancing to second on a sacrifice off the bat of Robert Sedin.

The lead was short-lived, however, as UCM followed with back-to-back doubles by Tyler Ruch and Jon Wegener to start the bottom half of the frame. Those would be Central Missouri's only hits of the evening.

Rossman recovered, sitting down the next three Mule hitters to strand the runner on second and keep the game tied at one.

The La Verne, Calif. pitched around a leadoff walk in the ninth and then worked a perfect 10th, turning things back over to his offense in the top of the 11th.

Susdorf's third single of the night started things off. He advanced to second on a balk and then moved to third on a wild pitch by UCM reliever Nick Phillips. Lee followed with a single to center field, bringing home what proved to be the deciding run.

Rossman then retired the Mules in order to seal the win and send UCSD to the semifinals for the second year in a row.

"That was his ball tonight and he prepared himself for this moment all year," O'Brien said. "He rose to the occasion and that's what great players do."

With the win, Rossman improves to 10-0 in 16 starts this season. He is the Tritons' third 10-game winner on the year, joining Tim Shibuya (13-2) and Kirby St. John (11-1), after quieting a Central Missouri offense that had scored at least two runs in all 61 of its games this season.

Phillips (2-3) took the loss for the Mules, allowing one run on five hits in two and a third. UCM starter Ryan Allen held the Tritons scoreless through five before giving way to Alex Kent, who allowed a run on two hits in two and two thirds innings of work.

Storm cells delayed Monday's game two and a half hours, pushing the start time back to 9:30 p.m. ET.
