LA JOLLA, Calif. - Brandon Gregorich of the UC San Diego baseball team earned the 2009-10 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Male Athlete of the Year honor, after the slugging first baseman set program single-season records in hits, doubles and runs batted in, en route to the Tritons' first-ever appearance in the Division II title game.
The CCAA Female Athlete of the Year accolade went to Christine Merrill of the UCSD track and field squad, conference officials announced Thursday. The award is voted on by the 12-member institutions' Sports Information Directors during their annual spring meeting. The selections of Gregorich and Merrill mark just the fourth time that two athletes from the same institution have swept the awards.
Gregorich, who is the first male Triton to win the CCAA's top honor, concludes his senior campaign with a team-high .452 batting average, while also leading UCSD in hits (103), doubles (30), runs batted in (84) and total bases (156). He hit seven homers in 2010 and scored 70 runs. Gregorich's 84 RBI established a CCAA single-season record and at the conclusion of the season, he was named an All-American by three different organizations.
The CCAA's Most Valuable Player, Gregorich also was tabbed the Daktronics West Region Player of the Year, National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) West Region Player of the Year and American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) West Region Player of the Year. Additionally, the Tritons' first baseman earned an ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove Award.
The Oakley, Calif., native is the ninth baseball player to be tabbed the CCAA's top male athlete and first since 1999-2000.
