LA JOLLA, Calif. - Stephanie Heinrich of the UC San Diego women's water polo team earned Player of the Year honors for the 2010 season, officials from the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches announced Thursday. Both Heinrich and teammate Kirsten Bates earned Division II All-American status from the ACWPC.
In 2010, the Tritons put together a strong year under first-year head coach Brad Kreutzkamp. UCSD recorded an 18-19 overall record while advancing to the Western Water Polo Association Championship game for the first time in six seasons.
Heinrich, a senior in 2010 out of Glendora, Calif., earned All-WWPA First Team honors after tallying 58 goals, 21 assists and 22 steals in her final season as a Triton. This season marks the second time that Heinrich has received ACWPC All-American status, after she earned the same title in 2009.
Bates, a sophomore from Reedley, Calif., took All-WWPA Second Team accolades after pacing the squad with 66 goals.
The Division II Player of the Year honor has been given to a member of the Tritons' squad in each of the last six seasons. Previous UCSD winners of the accolade include Sydney Gstettenbauer (2009), Kim Hockett (2008), Sarah Bajorek (2007), Kaitlin Foe (2006), Tobi Lyman (2005), Dana Tucker (2003) and Emma Kudritzki (2002).
