No. 8 UCSD Rolls Past Central Washington In Three Sets

MONMOUTH, Ore. - After hard-fought victory over No. 24 Alaska Anchorage earlier in the day, No. 8 UC San Diego cruised to a sweep of Central Washington at the Phoenix Inn GNAC Conference Challenge Friday evening on the campus of Western Oregon University.

Hillary Williamson finished with a match-high 13 kills, while Roxanne Brunsting tallied 11 kills and 10 digs for her second double-double of the day, leading the Tritons to a comfortable 25-18, 25-14, 25-18 triumph over the Wildcats.

After hitting just .184 in the win over Alaska Anchorage, UCSD (2-0) was much better against Central Washington (0-2), finishing at a .303 clip, while limiting the Wildcats to just .079 for the match. Williamson hit a .417 clip individually, while Brunsting finished at .308.

Janessa Werhane finished with a match-high 15 digs, while Katie Condon tallied seven kills and added 12 digs.

It was a much better performance for the Tritons, who nearly saw their 2-0 lead over UAA slip away in their season opener earlier Friday.

"That was a better all-around effort for us," head coach Ricci Luyties said. "We played with a lot more poise and I thought we did a really good job of controlling the game. We've still got a long way to go, but that was definitely a step in the right direction."

UCSD was in control from the outset, jumping out to an 11-5 lead in the first set following a service ace from Werhane and a Williamson kill. Central Washington closed to within 12-8, but Condon answered with a kill and a Wildcat service error made it 14-8. The Tritons would lead by at least four points the rest of the way until a kill by Thalia McCann sealed the opening set win.

Set two was close early on until another McCann kill and consecutive CWU errors resulted in a 17-12 Triton advantage. After a kill by the Wildcats' Molly Mayer made it 18-14, UCSD took over from there, scoring the final seven points to close out the set. CWU had three errors during the stretch, while Brunsting and Kaitlin Potter came up with big kills.

UCSD led 19-17 in set three when back-to-back Triton blocks at the net and a kill from Brunsting forced a Central Washington timeout with the scoreboard reading 22-17 in favor of UCSD. Brunsting followed with consecutive aces to bring the Tritons to match point and, after a Wildcat kill, Cara Simonsen delivered the final blow to wrap up the victory.

Try finished with 10 kills and 11 digs for Central Washington, while Brandie Vea also added 11 kills.

The Tritons will wrap up the Phoenix Inn GNAC Challenge on Saturday with a matchup against Western Washington at 10:00 a.m., followed by a bout with host Western Oregon at 8:00 p.m.
