Tritons To Face Elite Field At Asics/UC Irvine Invite Saturday

LA JOLLA, Calif. - After opening the season at home last weekend, the UC San Diego cross country teams will take part in the Asics/UC Irvine Invitational this Saturday, looking for a strong showing against a much deeper and stronger field.

Saturday's competition will feature four races at the Anteater Recreation Center Fields on the UCI campus, with the Triton men and women running in both 'A' events. The women's 5,000 meters A Race is scheduled to start at 8:40 a.m., followed by the men's 8,000 meters A Race at 9:10 a.m.

UCSD will be competing against an elite field from both the Division I and II levels in the team's second event of the 2010 campaign. In addition to host UC Irvine, the men's field will feature Azusa Pacific, Cal Poly, Cal State Northridge, Fresno State and Pepperdine, while APU, CSUN, Fresno State and USC are a few of the schools that will be entering teams on the women's side.

The Triton men head to Irvine on the heels of a tremendous performance on Friday, as head coach Nate Garcia's squad posted the top four times on the day and claimed six of the first seven spots overall in a resounding victory over Cerritos College and Point Loma Nazarene.

Redshirt senior Jesse Morrill led the pack, finishing first overall with a time of 22:15.3 on the four-mile course, while sophomore Matt Lenehan put together a strong race as well, placing second at 22:24.1.

Newcomers Mario Flores, Kellen Levy and Daniel Cooper rounded out the scoring for UCSD, finishing in third, fourth and sixth, respectively.

UCSD's women finished second behind Point Loma on the day, but the Tritons got strong performances from freshman Chia Chang, who finished third overall with a 2.5 mile time of 15:45, and junior Aaryn Kobayashi, who took fourth at 15:47.4. Jackie Sikkema, Jenny Kaehms, and Kaity Malloy were also scorers for UCSD.

The Tritons will be competing in the UC Irvine Invitational for the second year in a row. The men finished sixth out of 21 teams a year ago, while the women took eighth in a 13-team field.
