UCSD Dominates Redlands 8-1 in 2011 Debut

REDLANDS, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's tennis team swept the singles competition against Redlands on Saturday afternoon, taking home an 8-1 road win over the Bulldogs in the Tritons' 2011 debut.

Chapman Chan and Junya Yoshida put together the most dominant singles performances on the day, as Chan defeated Anish Nanda, 6-1 and 6-2, while Yoshida put up a 6-0, 6-2 win over Darren Dahl.

Vincent Nguyen, Austin West and Erik Elliott also won their matches in straight sets. Sam Ling was the lone Triton to drop a set in singles competition, winning in the third-set over Connor Hyde, 2-6, 6-2, and 11-9.

The Bulldogs opened the doubles competition by winning their lone match of the day. Hyde and Mark Bloom would take down Devon Sousa and Chan, 8-4. The Tritons would bounce back with an 8-6 victory by the Elliott-West duo to even the doubles score. However, Yoshida and Ling would give UCSD a leg-up with a narrow 9-7 victory over Redland's Kevin Wong and Casey Fashouer.

Saturday's competition marked the first time members of the UCSD squad have competed since the team went 17-12 overall at So Cal Intercollegiates on Nov. 7, 2010. Ling advanced to the final of the Singles Main Draw Consolation bracket in that tournament.

The Tritons return to the court Sunday afternoon, as UCSD takes on UC Riverside at 12:00 p.m. on the Highlanders' home courts.
