Danielle Melman assumed the position of Associate Athletics Director of External Relations in June of 2019. She is responsible for overseeing marketing, and is also responsible for the Triton Athletic Fund, sport-specific fundraising, constituent outreach and special events.
Melman joined UC San Diego in the summer of 2011 as Athletics Program Coordinator and was named the Assistant Athletics Director for External Relations in July of 2013.
As Assistant Athletics Director, Melman increased the department’s annual fund by 70 percent since taking over the position, resulting in breaking the half million dollar mark in 2017-18. She led the implementation and execution of sport-specific crowdfunding campaigns, raising over $100,000 annually throughout her years as Assistant Athletics Director. Since taking over the position as Assistant Athletics Director, Melman has increased alumni athlete donor annual giving participation by over 50 percent. She created new engagement opportunities for alumni and community, including the San Diego Unified School District Field Trip Day, the Triton Athlete Career Night and the Senior Scholar-Athlete Send Off.
Melman serves as the California Collegiate Athletic Association's (CCAA) representative for the National Association of Athletic Development Directors (NAADD). She was NAADD Rising Star Honoree in 2017 - the inaugural year for the award. In addition, she was a Bobby Purcell Mentor Program Participant during the 2015-16 academic year and has been a two-time Diversity Initiative Grant recipient. In addition, Melman is a member of Women Leaders in College Sports.
Prior to joining the UC San Diego Athletics Department, Melman worked at GEICO auto insurance for eight years. She held various positions in the sales and marketing department, including sales supervisor, sales analyst and partnership marketing manager. In 2011, Melman also served as a communication consultant to Sports Club Meteor, an Olympic Training Center in Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine, assisting in the development of the center’s strategic plan and focusing on marketing and communication efforts internally and externally.
Melman was a four-year letterwinner and two-year team captain in water polo during her undergraduate years at UC San Diego (2000-03). Her 60 assists in 2003 stood as the program's single season record until 2013. She ranks in the Tritons' top 10 with 101 career assists.
Melman earned a Master of Science in sports management from Drexel University in 2012 and a Bachelor of Science in biology from UC San Diego in 2003. She is an Elected Director with the Drexel Alumni Board of Governors and was the inaugural Drexel University Sports Management Young Alumni Award Honoree in 2018.
Originally from Arroyo Grande, Calif., Melman and her husband, David, have two children.
