MEN'S SOCCER FACES ST. MARTIN'S IN SATURDAY HOME OPENER
For the first time in Coach Jon Pascale's four years at UCSD, his Men's Soccer team will open on the road, heading to Riverside Thursday afternoon to tangle with D-II Cal Baptist...The Tritons, who went 8-2-2 in their final 12 outings last season, then come home to host St. Martin's Saturday night...UCSD is undefeated (2-0-1) in season openers under Pascale.
Pascale's roster will not include a single senior but does return 17 players from the 2010 squad... Among the returnees is second team All-CCAA goalkeeper Jesse Brennan but UCSD's other two all-conference picks from a year ago, CCAA Defensive Player of the Year Jared Kukura and midfielder Shane Micheil have both graduated.
NO. 2 WOMEN'S SOCCER DEBUTS WITH TOUGH ROAD PAIR
Coming off a fantastic, 19-3-3, campaign that concluded with his side finishing second at the NCAA Division II Championships in Louisville, Coach Brian McManus and his veteran-laden Women's Soccer team open the 2011 season ranked No. 2 nationally and facing a pair of tough road contests, Thursday at Western Washington Thursday and Saturday vs. 10th-ranked Seattle Pacific Saturday...The Tritons used a second half goal by Sarah McTigue to knock off SPU, 1-0, in last year's NCAA West Regional Final.
UCSD got its final pre-season tune-up last Friday night, scrimmaging against the Sea Lions, a local semi-pro squad...McManus will be able to call on 20 returners, including senior co-captains McTigue, the club's second-leading scorer in 2010, and Annie Wethe, as well as the defensive trio of sweeper Ellen Wilson, Sara Spaventa and Hayley Johnson and All-American keeper Kristin Armstrong.
