UCSD Finishes Seventh At California State Intercollegiate

HEMET, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's golf team concluded its first tournament of the 2011-12 season on Tuesday, placing seventh out of eight teams at the inaugural California State Intercollegiate Golf Tournament at the Diamond Valley Golf Club.

The Tritons wrapped up the competition with a final tally of 905 after carding a 311 in the third round. UCSD entered the day in sixth place following rounds of 299 and 295 on Monday, but had a rough day on the par-72, 6,776-yard layout and slipped one spot in the final team standings.

Cal State San Marcos, which trailed leader Cal Baptist by three strokes entering the final round, carded a 287 to win the tournament title by three strokes with a final score of 869. CBU finished second at 872 following a final round 302 and The Master's College and Point Loma Nazarent tied for third pace at 879.

UCSD finished three strokes behind sixth place Biola University (902) and 20 back of fifth place and host the University of La Verne (885).

Freshman Jay Lim was the Tritons' top finisher, placing 10th overall with a final tally of 2-over par, 218. The La Canada, Calif. native fired a 74 on Tuesday to finish 11 strokes back of the individual winner.

Sophomore David Smith wrapped up the tournament at 228 following a 79 in the final round on Tuesday and claimed a share of 25th place overall. Jacob Williams posted a third round score of 85 and finished at 231, while Lewis Simon carded a 73 to conclude the day at 233.

Individual medalist honors went to Thane Ringler of The Master's College, who finished with a final score of 9-under par, 207. He shot a 74 on Tuesday after carding rounds of 67 and 66 on Monday. Cal Baptists' Fredrik Hannson was second at 210 (76), followed by Cal State San Marcos' Steven Gouirand in third place at 212 (70).

The Tritons are back in action on October 17-18 at the Lindsay Olive Wildcat Classic hosted by Chico State.
