Swimmers and Divers Head Up the Coast to UC Santa Barbara

LA JOLLA, Calif. - After opening the season with a commanding victory over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at home last week, the UC San Diego swimming and diving team hits the road to take on Division I UC Santa Barbara Friday.

The event gets underway at 1 p.m. at UCSB's Campus Pool. For directions to the venue, click here.

Against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at Canyonview Aquatics Center on Oct. 29, senior All-American Alex Henley won three events as 17 different Tritons picked up victories. The UCSD men defeated the Stags by a score of 177 to 111. On the women's side, the Tritons topped the Athenas, 175 to 112.

Henley, a three-time NCAA national title holder and the reigning 200 butterfly champion, recorded wins in three different strokes including the 200 freestyle (1:55.73), the 200 fly (2:05.78) and the 200 backstroke (2:05.77).

Other multiple winners for UCSD included sophomore Alex Merrill, who topped the men's fields in the 100 free (47.33) as well as the 200 free (1:43.01) and senior Jamie Leigh Pearce, who was victorious in both the 1-meter (214.65) and 3-meter (237.90) diving events.

In the distance category, UCSD freshman Jessica Norgaard recorded her first collegiate win in the 1000 free (10:38.81) and senior Matt Herman won the event for the men (9:35.58). Herman collected titles in the 1000 and 1650 freestyles at the 2011 NCAA Championships.

UCSD saw two freshmen on top of the podium as Dane Stassi took the win in the 200 fly. His time of 1:48.97 ranks second on UCSD's top-ten list in the event.

So far this season, the UC Santa Barbara women suffered losses against UCLA and Denver and picked up a win over Oregon State, all at home. The men defeated Denver in their first and only contest of the season, also at home.

The annual early season meeting between the Tritons and Gauchos was swept by UCSB last year. The Gaucho women won 175.5-118.5 while the men were victorious by a score of 161.5-137.5. Triton Nick Korth won the 100 breaststroke as UCSD owned the top four spots in the event. Anji Shakya was a double winner, taking the 200 freestyle and 200 backstroke, while Henley won the 200 IM.

The UCSD diving contingent had a solid outing at UC Santa Barbara in 2010 as the men occupied all three podium spots in both events. Tyler Runsten won the 1-meter dive and Patrick Cohen took home the 3-meter win. For the women, Mishka Hulka won the 1-meter and Jamie Leigh Pearce was the winner in the 3-meter dive.

After the meet in Santa Barbara, the UCSD women compete at the University of San Diego on Nov. 12 before the Tritons head to the Arena Invitational in Long Beach Nov. 17-19.
