UCSD TO BATTLE UCLA IN NCAA WATER POLO SEMI-FINAL SATURDAY
Earning the spoils from the 15th Western Water Polo Assn. (WWPA) Championship it won two weekends ago, the Men's Water Polo team travels to Berkeley Thursday for the four-team 2011 NCAA Championship, at the Spieker Aquatics Center on the campus of UC Berkeley...Coach Denny Harper's club, 17-9 and ranked 10th nationally, is seeded third and will battle No. 2-ranked and second-seeded UCLA (23-4) Saturday at 3:12 PM...The winner will advance to Sunday's title tilt against the winner of the other semi-final game featuring top-seeded and top-ranked USC (22-3) and fourth seed Princeton (21-9)...The two losing teams will play for third place.

The Tritons will be making their 11th visit to the NCAA Championship but first since 2006... They gained this year's berth by defeating UC Davis, 8-7, in the WWPA Championship...UCSD will be led by senior goalie David Morton, the MVP of the WWPA Championship and senior Graham Saber, the club's leading scorer with 70 goals...All 11 NCAA appearances occurred with Harper at the helm and the highlight came in 2000 when the Tritons upended USC in the semi-final to become the first non-Division I team and only team not seeded first or second to reach the championship game.

SIX STRAIGHT WINS FOR TRITON WOMEN; OPEN CCAA PLAY FRIDAY
The eighth-ranked Women's Basketball team had plenty to be thankful for last weekend, extending its season-opening win streak to six in a row with a pair of victories as host of the UCSD Thanksgiving Classic at RIMAC Arena...Coach Charity Elliott's outfit now travels to Los Angeles where it will tip off California Collegiate Athletic Assn. (CCAA) play Friday night against Cal State Dominguez Hills (1-5) and hook up with Cal State L.A. (2-2) the next evening...The Tritons were the pre-season pick of the league's coaches to win the CCAA while Dominguez Hills and CSULA were tabbed for sixth and ninth respectively.

In last Friday's Thanksgiving tourney opener, UCSD went on a 14-0 run midway through the first half and cruised from there to an 85-55 victory over Cal State San Marcos...The Tritons constructed a 17-point halftime lead and got 39 points from their bench as 13 different players hit the score sheet...Seniors Lauren Freidenberg (14 pts./8 rebounds) and Chelsea Carlisle (11 pts./8 assists) were the offensive catalysts as UCSD shot 45.6% from the field and swarmed all over the Cougars defensively, causing 29 turnovers.

Carlisle exploded for 29 points, eight boards and six assists Saturday night as the Tritons romped to an impressive, 80-65, triumph over Fort Lewis (CO), handing the fourth-ranked Skyhawks their first loss of the year...UCSD again rode its aggressive defensive, scoring 30 points off its 21 turnovers...Junior Emily Osga (15 pts.) and senior Daisy Feder (14) provided plenty of support for Carlisle on the offensive end and sophomore Erin Dautremont snagged 10 rebounds...Elliott's charges again connected at a 45.6% clip from the floor (61.5% in the second half) with Carlisle leading with way, knocking down 10 of 16 attempts...Carlisle was named tournament MVP and joined on the all-tournament team by Osga and Freidenberg.

Watch Saturday night's post-game interview with Charity Elliott.

M-BASKETBALL LOOKS FOR FIRST CCAA WIN ON ROAD
After taking perennial CCAA title contender Cal State Bernardino to the brink in its 2011-12 conference opener last Tuesday, the Men's Basketball team will try to build off that effort when it hits the road this weekend to square off against Cal State Dominguez Hills (0-2/0-1) and Cal State L.A. (4-0/1-0)...Coach Chris Carlson's cagers are now 3-2 overall and 0-1 in CCAA play...Both games can be heard live on ESPN 1700 AM with Craig Elsten calling the action.

At RIMAC Arena last week, four Tritons--Tyler McGrath (15 pts.), Christian Hatch (11), Justin Brue (10) and Ryan Peters (10)--scored in double figures and UCSD led by eight at intermission, but was unable to close things out, falling, 66-63, in double overtime to Cal State San Bernardino...The Coyotes pushed back in the second half and had built up a five-point advantage of their own with 11:03 to go in regulation...A Peters three-pointer knotted the score with just under nine minutes left and neither side was able to generate more than a three-point edge until the second OT...San Bernardino charged out to a quick three-point margin in the first OT, but a three-point play by sophomore guard James McCann brought the two squads even again and a lay-up by Hatch with 31 ticks to go ended the first extra session at 55-55...It appeared to be the Tritons' night when a Brue jumper put them four  points ahead with 2:20 remaining in the second OT, but the Coyotes clawed back, went ahead by three with 18 seconds left and a three-point try to sophomore Dylan Bohanan rimmed out at 0:07 to end UCSD's last hope... Hatch pulled down a game high 15 rebounds for a double double and McCann dished out five assists...UCSD shot 46.2% as a team, compared to just 37.0% for San Bernardino, and turned the ball over only 10 times in 50 minutes.
