TRITON CAGERS FACE TWO-GAME NORCAL TREK
On the heels of a 1-1 home weekend, Coach Chris Carlson's Men's Basketball team gets a taste of life on the road this weekend with CCAA encounters at Cal State Stanislaus (5-6/1-5) Friday and Chico State (8-3/2-3) Saturday...The Tritons stand 5-6 overall, 1-5 in conference play and 11th in the CCAA standings...Stanislaus and Chico State are tied for fifth and eighth respectively.
Scorching the nets at a 58% clip, the Tritons built up an 18-pt. halftime advantage and made it stick, whipping San Francisco State, 72-50, at home Thursday night for their first CCAA victory of the season...Led by senior Mike Meza, who canned five treys and matched a career best with 19 points, UCSD shot 51.1% on the night and a blistering 61.5% from beyond the arc while finishing plus-13 in the rebounding department...Sophomore Ryan Peters paced UCSD with five caroms and the Tritons punctuated their hot-shooting night by draining 18 of 20 free throws.
For over 30 minutes, Carlson & Co. played undefeated and eighth-ranked Cal Poly Pomona to a draw Saturday night, but after squandering several opportunities to take the lead, the Tritons saw the league-leading Broncos reel off a 15-2 run and glide to the final buzzer in a 66-52 loss...Junior Tyler McGrath's 13 points paced UCSD and sophomore point guard James McCann scored seven points while assisting on five other buckets...The Tritons shot just 37.8% from the floor and were hurt inside as Cal Poly Pomona got 38 points in the paint.

NO. 4 WOMEN STAY PERFECT--STREAK AT 12 STRAIGHT
With its undefeated string now extended to 12 games, Coach Charity Elliott's fourth-ranked Women's Basketball team makes its first conference trip to Northern California when it challenges Cal State Stanislaus (3-6/0-5) and Chico State (6-3/3-2) this weekend...UCSD maintains a half game edge in the league standings over the CCAA's only other unbeaten squad, Cal State Monterey Bay....Chico State enters the week in sixth place and Stanislaus is mired in 11th...The Tritons swept their series with both teams last year.
Despite shooting nearly 10% lower than their season average, the Tritons manhandled visiting San Francisco State, 79-44, Thursday night at RIMAC Arena...UCSD led, 32-19, at intermission and blew things wide open with a 20-0 run early in the second half...Senior Chelsea Carlisle finished with a game high 15 points to go with six rebounds and six assists... Fellow seniors Daisy Feder and Lauren Freidenberg chipped in with 12 and 10 points respectively...The latter topped UCSD with nine boards, the Tritons dominated the Gators, 56-13, on the glass and allowed their opponents to hit just 26.8% from the field as Elliott found minutes for 15 different players in a contest that was run-and-gun for the full 40 minutes.
Carlisle poured in 20 poins and pulled down six rebounds Saturday night as the Tritons remained unbeaten with an impressive, 78-64, triumph over previously undefeated Cal Poly Pomona...Ten unanswered points late in the first half allowed UCSD to take a 13-pt. edge into the break and the Broncos never got within single digits again...Freidenberg (16 pts./8 rebounds) and junior Emily Osga (16 pts/7 rebounds/6 assists) had big all-around games, Feder added 13 points and the defense forced 18 Cal Poly turnovers.

SWIMMING & DIVING TESTS GRAND CANYON HERE SATURDAY
After a 18-day lapse, the Triton Swimming & Diving teams step back into the competitive arena this weekend with a pair of local events...Friday afternoon, both squads will head crosstown to San Diego State where the men will engage Rice and the women will face off against Rice and Washington State, as well as SDSU.
Saturday the Tritons return to Canyonview Pool where they host Division II power Grand Canyon...The UCSD women figure to be solid favorites against the Antelopes but the men will have their hands full against a talented opponent stacked with foreign stars...The UCSD and Grand Canyon men finished second and third respectively at the 2011 NCAA Division II Championships in San Antonio and Saturday's match-up reckons to be a battle between the visitor's individual standouts and the Tritons' depth.
VOLLEYBALL IN HAWAII FOR 2012 OPENER
Coach Kevin Ring opens his seventh season at the helm of the Men's Volleyball team when the Tritons travel to Honolulu for a two-match set with Hawaii, a club that finished eighth in the final national poll of 2011 and split its two matches with UCSD last season at RIMAC Arena...UCSD and UH have each won three of their last six meeting...The first of this year's two contests will be Thursday night and the two squads will square off again 24 hours later.
Ring will be fielding a young, but athletic lineup in 2012...Junior outside hitter Carl Eberts, the team's kill leader with 326 a year ago, is back to anchor the offense...Sophomore Mike Brunsting, who saw limited action as a freshman behind four-year starter Phil Bannan, steps in at setter...Fast-improving sophomore Vaun Lennon will bookend Eberts at outside hitter and 6-6 freshman Chris Andrulis looks to get the first shot at opposite... Returners Sebastian Brady and Fred Stahl are favorites to start in the middle where redshirt junior Greg Smith also figures for playing time...The 6-7 Brady earned 26 starts as a freshman in 2011...Returnering starter Chase Frishman and freshman Kevin McGinnis top Ring's choices at libero... UCSD has its final pre-season tune-up today---a 4:00 PM exhibition vs. Canadian visitor Brandon.
