LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego softball team will host Concordia University (CA) on Wednesday afternoon in a preseason exhibitionat Triton Softball Field. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. and admission is free.
UCSD holds a 15-5 all-time record against Concordia. The Eagles, who hail from Irvine, Calif., are ranked No. 8 in the NAIA Softball Preseason Coaches' Poll and are coming off their best season in program history (47-13).
Wednesday's exhibition, as well as all regular season home games, will be covered by Live Stats.
The Tritons also return to the diamond after their most successful season in program history. UCSD earned its first-ever national championship and regular season CCAA title while setting a school record for wins (45-13) in 2011. The team was ranked in the NFCA Top 25 for all 13 weeks during the regular season and remained in the top ten for seven weeks.
UCSD was recently tabbed as the preseason favorite to win another CCAA title in 2012 in a poll of conference coaches on January 18. The Tritons totaled 81 points and nine first-place votes to finish ahead of Chico State, which received 65 votes.
2011 NFCA Coach of the Year Patti Gerckens welcomes back another talented roster, headlined by senior All-American pitcher Camille Gaito and senior All-West Region centerfielder Kris Lesovsky. In addition, the Tritons return five starters and 13 total letterwinners from the title squad.
Gaito set single-season school records for victories (35) and appearances (47) while finishing with the nation's fourth-lowest ERA (0.75), the lowest for any pitcher in the country with over 35 appearances. She earned CCAA Pitcher of the Year, Daktronics West Region Pitcher of the Year and Daktronics First Team All-America (among others) while becoming the school's new record-holder for career victories (65).
Lesovsky was granted a fifth year of eligibility by the NCAA in the Fall of 2011 and is currently the school's career leader in average (.387), walks (113) and doubles (51). She's led UCSD in virtually every offensive category since arriving in 2009 and has started 163 consecutive contests for the Tritons.
CCAA Freshman of the Year Mya Romero also returns to the Tritons, one of only two players to start every game in 2011. Romero went 3-for-3 with three runs, two doubles, a triple, an RBI and seven total bases in her first appearance as a freshman last year. She'll anchor the Triton infield at shortstop along with first baseman/catcher Caitlin Brown and second baseman Emily McQuaid.
UCSD will also have to replace a group of key starters from 2011; Jennifer De Fazio, Katrin Gabriel and Sarah Woofter graduated last Spring and Esther Strom left the team for personal reasons. De Fazio was named to the All-NCAA Tournament Team and Woofter was an All-CCAA Second Team selection.
The Tritons' regular-season title defense begins on February 3 with a pair of non-conference doubleheaders on back-to-back days against Northwest Nazarene College at Triton Softball Field. The next weekend, February 10 and 11, UCSD opens CCAA play with four games at home against Chico State.
