Tritons Win Fourth Consecutive Conference Championships

LA MIRADA, Calif. - For the fourth consecutive year, UC San Diego brought home league titles as both the men and women placed first at the 2012 Pacific Coast Swimming and Diving Conference Championships at the Splash! La Mirada Aquatic Center Saturday.

The Triton women, ranked No. 1 in the country, won three events Saturday to top the field with 1663.5 points over the four-day event. Cal Baptist was second with 1268.5 points and Fresno Pacific placed a distant third with 733.

The men, ranked third nationally, picked up four victories to finish the Championships with 1649 points over second place Cal Baptist (1422) and third place Concordia (1133).

"This was a total team win," said UCSD co-head coach Matt Macedo. "Our senior class provided the leadership to keep our team on track throughout this long week of racing. I cannot wait to see what this team is capable of in a couple of weeks (at NCAA's) as I believe the best is yet to come."

Nick Korth, the reigning national champion in the 200 breaststroke, won the event today with a time of 1:57.47. The Tritons mirrored their performance in Friday's 100 breast, capturing the top four spots with See Han Lee in second (2:00.96), Jacob Lammott in third (2:01.27) and Griffin Bracke in fourth (2:03.66).

Other individual winners for the men included Martin Vanek in the 200 backstroke (1:49.87) and Adam Rice in the 200 butterfly (1:49.53).

The men's 400 free relay went to the Triton team of Reid McCallum, Alex Merrill, Bracke and Blake Langland, who posted a winning time of 3:01.17.

Matt Herman was UCSD's top finisher in the 1650 freestyle, placing second with a time of 15:37.30. McCallum was second in the 100 freestyle, clocking a 45.86.

The Triton women also dominated in the 200 breaststroke. Emily Adamczyk took the win, swimming a 2:16.71. She was followed by teammates Neda Nguyen in second (2:19.22), Eva Chen in third (2:20.57) and Casey Adams in fourth (2:21.63).

Alex Henley was victorious in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:58.19.

The women's 400 free relay team of Sierra Robbins, Amber Tan, Jaclyn Amog and Chen was also a winner, combining to swim a 3:29.13 for the victory.

Bethany Dong was second in the 1650 free (17:17.04), Gabby Rossbach was third in the 200 fly (2:05.50) and Olivia Fountain was UCSD's best peformer in the 100 free, placing fourth (51.86).

Throughout the PCSC Championships, the Tritons won a combined 26 events, 14 for the men and 12 for the women. Ten of the 26 victories came in relay events. Henley and Korth each won three individual events. Rice and Anji Shakya had two wins apiece.

"Overall I'm very proud of the teams' performance," UCSD co-head coach Corrie Falcon said. "Now it's time to refocus on having the best NCAA's in school history."

The NCAA Championships take place Mar. 14-17 in Mansfield, Texas. Although the exact number of qualifiers won't be known for a couple of weeks, UCSD is expecting to have around 16 men and 14 women, plus three men's divers, competing in Texas.
