Tritons Sweep Cal Poly Pomona, CMS in Season Opener Saturday

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego track and field teams kicked off the 2012 season with a bang on Saturday, registering a pair of team victories over Cal Poly Pomona and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at the Triton Track and Field Stadium.

UCSD scored a total of 169 points to run away from CMS (91) and Pomona (90) on the women's side, while the Triton men finished with 152 points to easily take down the Broncos (119) and Stags (91).

UC San Diego looked sharp in its first official competition of the season as the Tritons captured a total of 25 events on the day and four athletes recorded NCAA provisional qualifying marks.

"Any time you can get four national qualifying marks in a season opener it's a good day," men's head coach Tony Salerno said. "Both teams competed very well against two long-time rivals in CMS and Cal Poly Pomona."

Senior Ka Wai Ng had the biggest highlight of the day, picking up an NCAA provisional qualifier and setting the school record in the men's triple jump with a mark of 49'6.5". His performance eclipsed the previous record of 48'10.75" set by Scott Tsuda in 2009.

Ng also won the men's long jump with a leap of 22'4.5".

Junior Zach Nagengast also had a big day, sweeping the shot put, discus and hammer with first place marks of 47'3.5", 158'4" and 170'7" respectively.

Other event winners for UCSD on the men's side included Kellen Levy (3000 meters; 8:40.59), Quentin McWhorter (110-meter hurdles; 15.96), Andrew Herbold (400-meter hurdles, 55.93), Nick Howe (high jump; 6'3.25") and Benjamin Berthet (pole vault; 14'9").

Senior Jacqueline Rose had an excellent performance for the Triton women, winning both the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes at 25.45 and 55.82, respectively. Her time in the 400 was good enough for a NCAA provisional qualifier.

Senior Erin Langford and junior Jessica Miklaski also picked up provisional marks on the day, as Langford hit 18'8" in the long jump and Miklaski uncorked a big throw of 134'3" in the javelin. Langford also won the triple jump with a leap of 37'9.25".

Senior Caitlin Meagher posted victories in both hurdle events, clocking in at 15.94 in the 100-meters and 1:05.63 in the 400-meters.

Kathleen Hitchens (100; 12.87), Lorato Anderson (800; 2:22.84), Veronica Bradley (high jump; 5'3.75"), Eva Isaacs (shot put; 38'4"), Uchenna Agbahiwe (discus; 136'9") and Shana Emile (hammer; 144'2") also won events for UCSD. The Triton women won both relays as well, posting a time of 49.13 in the 4x100 and 3:54.49 in the 4x400.

"It was a good start to the season and it's always great to see so many event winners and early season personal records," head women's coach Darcy Ahner said.

The Tritons will be back in action next Saturday with the Rossi Relays on the CMS campus in Claremont.
