SOFTBALL OPENS FOUR-GAME SET WITH EAST BAY TODAY
Coach Patti Gerckens' 14th-ranked Softball team faces conference foe Cal State East Bay (16-14/8-12) for doubleheaders today and tomorrow at Triton Softball stadium...The Tritons, now 24-8/18-6 , stand second in the CCAA standings while the Pioneers are seventh...The series was scheduled to start yesterday but predicted rain led the two clubs to push it back a day...Both teams will participate in the Tournament of Champions this weekend in Turlock.

At the upcoming tourney, UCSD will play three games Friday, facing Central Washington (11:00 AM), Grand Canyon (3:30 PM) and Hawaii  Hilo (5:45 PM)...On Saturday, the Tritons will tangle with Hawaii Pacific (11:15 AM) and Notre Dame de Namur (1:30 PM)...Sunday's schedule will be determined by the results of the two previous days.

ROAD SERIES AT STANISLAUS STATE NEXT FOR BASEBALL TEAM
After taking a 12-day hiatus for finals, Coach Eric Newman's Baseball team (14-14/12-8) looks to pick up where it left off, traveling to Turlock for a huge four-game series against Cal State Stanislaus (15-11/12-8)...Newman's outfit has won seven of its last 10 outings and now sits tied with Stanislaus for third in the CCAA standings...Sonoma State is first at 13-3 with Chico State in second, half a game up on UCSD and Stanislaus at 12-7...During the break, Newman and his wife Melissa, welcomed their second child, Jack, into the family.

MEN'S V-BALL TAKES ON NO. 3 UCLA HERE FRIDAY
Riding an unprecedented three-game Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) road winning streak, Coach Kevin Ring's Men's Volleyball squad returns to RIMAC Arena this week, hosting No. 3 UCLA (19-4) Friday and No. 15 UC Santa Barbara (5-15) Saturday...The 13th-ranked Tritons, owners of a 6-16 record, lost in four sets at UCLA and defeated UCSB to start their current three-game streak.

SD CREW CLASSIC BRINGS TOP COLLEGIATE SQUADS TO MISSION BAY
The Men's & Women's Rowing teams will stay local this weekend, competing in the annual San Diego Crew Classic, Saturday and Sunday on Mission Bay...On the men's side, Coach Zach Johnson will be sending out a varsity, second varsity and novice eights with the V-8 going in the prestigious Copley Cup for the second straight year...In 2011, the Tritons were fifth in that race...Meanwhile, Coach Pattie Pinkerton's women will be fielding varsity, second varsity, third varsity, novice and second novice eights...Her V-8 and second V-8 will be entered in the Sea World Cup, a Division II-III race, while the third V-8 and second novice eight will be in the extremely challenging Open Eight...Both UCSD teams are expecting to have alumni boats competing as well.

Last weekend in Newport, the women's team hit the water in the annual Berg Cup Regatta and emerged with mostly positive results...In what has become somewhat of a recurring theme, the varsity eight ran fast in the opening half of its race only to struggle coming home, winding up fourth this time in a contest won by Loyola Marymount...They will be looking to put two good halves together this weekend...Faring better was the varsity four, featuring the revamped lineup of Alexis Jacques, Tanya Vander Vis, Carolyn Belak, Catie Martinez and coxswain Thuy-Uyen Huynh, which came from off the pace to finish second, short of an LMU boat seven lanes away by less than a second...The novice eight and second

WOMEN'S POLO HOME FOR THREE THIS WEEKEND
Winner in five of its last nine contests, but still searching for its best form, Coach Brad Kreutzkamp's Women's Water Polo team will host a four-team "mini-tournament" this weekend at Canyonview Pool...Just over .500 at 12-11, the No. 19 Tritons will face Ivy League invader Brown Friday night and square off against both Azusa Pacific (11:30 AM) and Fresno Pacific (2:00 PM) Saturday...For the second time this season, sophomore Sarah Lizotte was named WWPA Player of the Week (March 12-18).

HOME FINALE TODAY FOR M-TENNIS VS. UC SANTA CRUZ
Coach Eric Steidlmayer's Men's Tennis team plays its final home match of 2012 this afternoon when perennial Division III power UC Santa Cruz visits the North Courts...The Tritons bring a 12-2 record and No. 16 national ranking into the match...It will be the final La Jolla appearance for seniors Chapman Chan, Sam Ling and Jason Wall.

After taking on the Banana Slugs, UCSD will head north for a tough three-day trek where it will hook up with Azusa Pacific, UC Santa Barbara and Westmont.

WOMEN'S TENNIS MAKES SPRING BREAK SOJOURN TO FLORIDA
Though 5-5 in their last 10 dual matches, Coach Liz LaPlante's 19th-ranked Women's Tennis team will be trying to halt a three-match losing streak when it plays for the first time in 16 days Friday at the West Florida Invitational in Pensacola...The cross country trip will pit UCSD (5-8) against three high level opponents---Delta State (Fri.), West Florida (Sat.) and Valdosta State (Sun.)...West Florida and Delta State are both in the top 10 of the NCAA's South Region...The Tritons, ranked No. 4 in the West Region, are back home April 11 vs. Cal State Stanislaus.

BIG DAY FOR TRACK & FIELD AT POINT LOMA; CAL-NEVADA NEXT
Competing with an undersized squad, the Track & Field teams still managed to come away with impressive individual and team performances at last weekend's Point Loma Collegiate Open...The UCSD men racked up nine individual wins and claimed second on the point table in the 10-team competition...The women were sixth while registering three first place finishes...The Tritons will split the squad next weekend with those qualified going to the Cal-Nevada Championships at Claremont and a second group heading back to Point Loma for the Point Loma Invitational.

At Point Loma, five of the Triton men's six victories came in field events...Seniors Nick Howe (javelin/205-10), Jeffrey Head (long jump/22-10) and Ka Wai Ng (triple jump/47-11) led the charge, defending national champion Howe earning an NCAA provisional qualifier with his mark...Juniors Ryan Eckert (shot put/50-5.5) and Zach Nagengast (hammer/164-0) rounded out the field event blue ribbons while another senior, Dustin Harris, clocked 1:55.36 to capture the 800...On the women's side, a pair of freshmen, Sabrina Pimentel (800/2:13.25) and Chantia Justice (triple jump/36-7.75) logged wins, as did senior Jacqueline Rose (400/55.02)...Pimentel, had her biggest effort as a Triton, posting not only an NCAA provisional qualifying number but the third best 800 time in UCSD history...Senior Erin Langford also garnered a No. 3 all-time mark, finishing second in the long jump at 19-3.25.

THUNDERBIRD INVITATIONAL ON TAP FOR TRITON GOLFERS
Coming off a 10th place finish in its own Southern California Intercollegiate two weeks ago at Mission Viejo Country Club, Coach Mike Wydra's Golf team plays in the 20-team Grand Canyon Thunderbird Invitational, starting today at The Wigwam (Red Course-6,852 yds.) in Litchfield Park, AZ...The Tritons were 11th in this event in 2011 when it was held at Palm Valley Country Club in Goodyear, AZ...Making up the five-man UCSD lineup will be sophomores Lewis Simon, Jacob Williams and David Smith and freshmen Jay Lim and Marc Herrmann...Williams held the 36-hole lead in this tournament last year before a difficult final round left him tied for 24th.

FENCING DUO HAS IDENTICAL NCAA OUTCOME
UCSD's two representatives at last week's 2012 NCAA Fencing Championships in Columbus, OH---junior Rose Forcier in foil and sophomore sabre specialist Munira Gesner---both returned to San Diego with 24th place finishes...Both were making their first NCAA appearances...The highlight of the event for the Tritons was Gesner's stunning, 5-4, triumph over Notre Dame All-American Lian Osier, a member of last year's national championship squad.
