UCSD Completes Strong Showing at Triton Invitational on Saturday

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego track and field teams wrapped up another highly successful Triton Invitational on Saturday, competing against athletes from all over the world on their home track.

Lining up alongside past Olympians, world record holders and collegians from multiple levels, UCSD student-athletes recorded several impressive results, while also gaining invaluable experience heading into the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships next weekend in Los Angeles.

"Both squads looked sharp today and that's always good to see considering the competition at this meet," women's head coach Darcy Ahner said. "We're ready to go for conference next week and we're excited to see what we can do."

Senior sprinter Jacqueline Rose was one of several standouts for the Tritons on Saturday, recording another individual victory in the women's 400-meter dash. Rose clocked in at 53.64 to fend off elite runner Nicole Stone (54.02) and Cal State Fullerton's Katie Wilson (54.37). Teammate Lauren Irish finished seventh at 58.07.

Fellow senior Nick Howe turned in a strong performance in the men's javelin invitational, finishing third overall with a big toss of 226'8". Seeded seventh in the field, Howe finished behind only Mike Hazle of Nike (236'3") and Long Beach State's Benjamin Woodruff (228'3"). Hazle is the defending U.S. Champion in the event and claimed the silver medal at the Pan Am Games.

Freshman Sabrina Pimentel improved her NCAA Division II provisional qualifier in the 800-meters, posting a third place time of 2:12.80. Teammate Lorato Anderson collected a pro qualifier in the event as well, finishing fourth at 2:13.98. Her time was a new personal best.

The women's 4x100 relay team of Kathleen Hitchens, Caitlin Meagher, Chelsey Kamson and Rose finished second overall with a time of 47.93. Cal State Fullerton won the event at 46.12.

UCSD had three of the top seven times in the women's 400-meter hurdles as Deyna Roberson finished fourth (1:03.14), Meagher placed sixth (1:03.41) and Irish came in seventh (1:03.42). Meagher also finished seventh in the 100-meter hurdles (14.76) earlier in the day.

Chantia Justice and Chanel Reaves finished fourth and fifth in the women's triple jump with respective marks of 36'5" and 35'7.25", while Veronica Bradley finished sixth in both the high jump and long jump. She cleared 5'2.25" in the high jump, before hitting 17'10.75" in the long jump.

On the men's side, Dustin Harris finished second in the 800 with an impressive time of 1:52.68, while Eric Vetter was sixth in the 400 at 50.07. Keith Rose finished seventh in both the 100 and 200 with respective times of 11.08 and 22.52.

Anthony Heredia (3:59.14) and Daniel Hauptman (4:00.78) posted top-five finishes in the 1500, while David Baker placed third in the 110-meter hurdles at 15.97. Antony Kountouris had the third-best mark in the men's triple jump at 44'3.25".

Ryan Eckert, Zach Nagengast and Matt Endler finished 5-6-7 in the men's shot put open with respective marks of 50'4", 47'4.5" and 45'8.5".

UCSD will now have a short turnaround before the CCAA Championship begin Thursday on the campus of Cal State L.A. in Los Angeles. The Triton women finished second and the men came in third at the conference meet in 2011.
