OVER 600 ATTEND ATHLETICS RECOGNITION DINNER
All-Americans Camille Gaito of the Softball team and Nick Howe from Track & Field took top honors at last Thursday night's 2012 Athletics Recognition Dinner...More than 600 guests packed UCSD's Price Center Ballroom for the event and saw Gaito and Howe recognized as the Outstanding Female and Male Senior Student-Athlete respectively...The awards were earned on the basis of combined athletic and academic success.
Gaito was also one of 16 Tritons honored as "Athletes of the Year"...She was joined by teammate Kris Lesovsky, swimmers Alex Henley, Emily Adamczyk, Nick Korth and Adam Rice, track & field stars Ka Wai Ng and Jacqueline Rose, baseball standouts Danny Susdorf and Ryan Goodbrand, women's basketball stars Chelsea Carlisle and Daisy Feder as well as David Morton (men's water polo), Sarah Lizotte (women's water polo), Sarah McTigue (women's soccer) and Roxanne Brunsting (women's volleyball).
Other individual award winners included Softball Head Coach Patti Gerckens (Excellence in Coaching) and soccer/softball senior Annie Wethe (Husar Family TAA Award for leadership/community service)...The six seniors with the highest cumulative GPA---John Svet (cross country/track & field), Ellen Umeda (women's crew), Elias Tuma (baseball), Kathryn Turner (cross country/track & field), Austin West (men's tennis) and Kelsey Quigley (women's swimming)---were named Chancellor's Scholar-Athletes...Other winners were Bill Cohn (Meritorious Service) and Dave Siegel (Distinguished Alumni Athlete)...The Women's Soccer team snagged both the Team GPA and the Leon T. Roach Team Spirit Awards.
UCSD SEVENTH IN FINAL DIRECTORS' CUP STANDINGS
Getting spring points in Softball, Baseball, Track & Field and Golf, UC San Diego finished with 645 total points to place seventh in the final 2011-12 Division II Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings...The Directors' Cup annually ranks the top overall athletic programs in each NCAA division, based on performance in NCAA Championship competition...UCSD wound up in the top 10 for the 11th time in its 12-year tenure at Division II...Grand Canyon unseated eight-time D-II title winner Grand Valley State for the top spot.

This week's edition of Triton Talk, UC San Diego's weekly online radio show hosted by Craig Elsten, is scheduled to feature interviews with the Outstanding Female Senior Student-Athlete of the Year, Camille Gaito (softball) and Head Coach Ricci Luyties of the Women's Volleyball team...The show will be posted Wednesday afternoon at ucsdtritons.com.
Senior pitcher Elias Tuma of UCSD's regular season and conference tournament champion Baseball team was named the CCAA's Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year...A cognitive science major sporting a 3.93 GPA, Tuma is UCSD's second straight winner on the male side, following 2011 reciipient David Bakal of the Men's Soccer team.
Also on the academic front, junior Brian Donohoe from the Men's Water Polo squad was named to the first team of the Capital One Academic At-Large All-America team...A history major with a 3.96 GPA in history, Donohoe was the only non-Division I athlete on the first team.
