Prior to joining UCSD, McRae got her start in sports information at her alma mater, Cal State Monterey Bay, where she started as a student intern. Shortly after graduating, she continued at CSUMB as the Athletics Communications Assistant and was the primary media contact for men's and women's cross country, women's water polo and the Otter Athletics Twitter account. In addition, McRae took on responsibilities for the Otter Pups Kids Club.

McRae earned a Bachelor's Degree in kinesiology at Cal State Monterey Bay. She was a four-year letterwinner in water polo during her undergraduate years at CSUMB (2008-11).
