FIRST TWO AT HOME FOR MEN'S SOCCER TEAM
Coach Jon Pascale begins his fifth season with the Men's Soccer team Thursday night as his Tritons host Cal Baptist at Triton Soccer Stadium...Academy of Art visits La Jolla Saturday night for the second half of a soccer doubleheader...Both contests kick off at 7:00 PM.
The Tritons, who registered a 10-8 record in 2011 and finished the campaign with four straight wins, bring everyone back from that side which just missed a berth in the CCAA Championship Tournament...UCSD scored eight times without surrendering a goal in three pre-season exhibitions but likely did not face an opponent of CBU's caliber in that stretch...Defense again figures to be key for the Tritons and Pascale can be expected to start all-conference junior Alec Arsht in the center midfield slot with the junior quartet of Gavin Lamming, Andrew Keimach, Ian McAuley and Will Pleskow in front of another junior, keeper Josh Cohen.
NO. 18 WOMEN'S SOCCER FACES CENTRAL WASHINGTON IN OPENER
Pegged as the pre-season favorite in the always competitive CCAA, the No. 18 Women's Soccer team opens Coach Brian McManus's 26th year at the helm when it hosts regional foe Central Washington Saturday...The Tritons, 13-3-4 and winner of the CCAA South Division a year ago, scrimmaged against Point Loma Saturday night and play additional preps tonight (vs. Concordia) and Tuesday (vs. San Diego Christian).
McManus will have three returning All-CCAA picks in his starting lineup Saturday, senior defender Hayley Johnson (first team), senior midfielder Jessica Wi (HM) and freshman midfielder Cassie Callahan (HM)...Callahan was also last year's CCAA's Freshman of the Year...Johnson, along with fellow senior Ellen Wilson and sophomore Michelle Yasutake, will anchor the Triton defense...Their experience figures to be significant as the last line of defense in front of freshman keeper Kelcie Brodsky who takes over from graduated All-American Kristin Armstrong... Callahan, senior Gabi Hernandez and sophomore Izzy Pozurama are UCSD's top returning goal scorers, having netted three apiece in 2011...Johnson, who topped the squad with 13 assists as a junior, is 10th on the career list in that category.
CROSS COUNTRY KICKS OFF 2012 SEASON AT HOME FRIDAY
Fresh off a 10-day training stint in Mammoth, Coach Nate Garcia's Cross Country team opens its 2012 season Friday afternoon against an array of opponents on the Tritons' north campus course...The men will go four miles (4:00 PM) against Point Loma and Long Beach City College while the women will engage the same two squads plus Cal State L.A., Cal State San Bernardino and San Diego State over 2.5 miles with the gun slated for 4:40 PM.
On the men's side, among Garcia's returners are the team's top three finishers at last year's conference meet---senior Matt Lenehan and juniors Kellen Levy and Ben Rich---as well as junior Mario Flores and sophomore Daniel Hauptman...Also looking strong are freshmen Tareq Alwafai and Eddie Carrillo...For the women, last year's top two runners, junior Chia Chang and sophomore Michelle Le Roux, headline a young squad that also includes the 3-5 finishers at the CCAA Championships (Dani Brabender, Alia Bales and Ximena Cruz) as well as improving junior Samantha Groff, freshmen Maria Diaz and Carolina Guzman and senior Elena Inouye, trying to rebound after battling injuries for most of the past two seasons.
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL MAKES 2012 DEBUT IN ARIZONA TOURNEY
Year three of the Ricci Luyties Era of Women's Volleyball opens on the road this week as the 17th-ranked Tritons travel to Phoenix, AZ for the Grand Canyon Invitational Friday and Saturday...On day one, UCSD will pair up with Western New Mexico and Grand Canyon and then square off against Metro State and Colorado-Colorado Springs on Saturday.
Luyties, who fielded a 22-6 club that reached the NCAA second round last fall, will put an extremely young outfit on the floor in 2012...There are no seniors on the Triton roster and will likely be multiple freshmen in the starting lineup...Despite losing six seniors, four of whom earned All-CCAA honors at least once in their careers, UCSD can boast a degree of experience heading into the season...Sophomore setter Amber Hawthorne earned 14 starts as a freshman and middle blockers Lauren Demos and Sara McCutchan combined for 39 starts a year ago... Sophomore opposite Rachelle Kinney and junior libero Brittany Lombardi will add to the experience quotient.
THREE MPSF FOES ON TAP FOR MEN'S WATER POLO AT IRVINE
Coach Denny Harper's 33rd season as head coach of the UC San Diego Men's Water Polo team will begin Saturday with a one-day, three-game tournament at UC Irvine...The Tritons will hook up with Stanford at 11:30 AM, then battle host UC Irvine at 2:30 PM and close things up against Long Beach State at 6:30 PM.
Harper will have five of six field starters returning from a 2011 squad that won the Western Water Polo Assn. (WWPA) title and went to the NCAA Championships...Leading goal scorer Graham Saber has graduated but theTritons will have Nos. 2 through 8 back, paced by the upper class trio of Brian Donohoe, John Butler and Josh Stiling...They figure to be joined in the starting lineup by three sophomores---Matt Michalko, David Higginson and Joe Dietrich---with another soph, Lukas Syka also getting solid minutes...The big question mark is in the cage where sophomore Cameron Ravanbach and junior Nick Michels are vying to replace four-year starter and WWPA Tournament MVP David Morton.

The NCAA Banner presentation in RIMAC Arena for 2011-12 national runner-ups Men's Swimming & Diving and Softball is slated to take place at halftime of the Sept. 29 Women's Volleyball match vs. Cal State Stanislaus.
