NO. 25 WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL SQUAD PLAYS HOME OPENER FRIDAY
Coming off a 3-1 performance at the Seawolf Spike in Sonoma, Coach Ricci Luyties' Women's Volleyball team is home for the first time in 2012, hosting Cal State Dominguez Hills (Friday) and Cal State L.A. (Saturday) at RIMAC Arena during the CCAA's opening weekend...The No. 25 Tritons bring a 5-3 overall mark into their home opener while Dominguez Hills and Cal State L.A. both come into conference play 2-5.
Luyties & Co. got off to a good start in Sonoma last Friday, coming back from two sets down and surviving a five-set marathon with undefeated Western Washington, 3-2 (21-25, 15-25, 25-20, 25-21, 15-13)...Freshman outside hitter Danielle Dahle had a monster match, blasting 26 kills while hitting a robust .361, ripping half of UCSD's six aces and getting four block assists... Sophomore setter Amber Hawthorne handed out 58 assists with sophomores Sara McCutchan (19) and Rachel Gam (13) also reaching double figures in the kills column...Later that day, perhaps fatigued from the lengthy opener, the Tritons were topped, 3-1 (23-25, 25-14, 15-23, 25-22) by Central Washington, hitting just .100 and getting out-blocked, 20-13...McCutchan (11 kills) and Dahle (10) were the offensive leaders.
UCSD bounced back quickly on Saturday, disposing of Seattle Pacific in straight sets, 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-20) with sophomore Rachelle Kinney knocking down nine kills and Dahle chipping in with seven, to go with three aces and seven digs...Hawthorne piled up 22 assists and served two aces and Lizzy Andrews finished with a team high 13 digs...The Tritons rolled in three sets again, closing out the tournament with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 27-25) triumph over Dominican Saturday afternoon...As a team, UCSD hit a blazing .350 and won the blocking battle, 6-3...Gam (16 kills/.393) and Dahle (14/.500) were forces in the attack while Hawthorne distributed 30 assists.
NORCAL TOURNEY ON TAP FOR NO. 11 MEN'S WATER POLO
Looking to rebound from a disappointing effort last weekend at UC Santa Barbara, Coach Denny Harper's Men's Water Polo team will face more top caliber opponents this Saturday and Sunday at the annual NorCal Invitational, hosted by Stanford...The 1-0 Tritons challenge No. 6 UC Irvine at 12:15 PM Saturday and depending on the outcome of will be tested by either Cal or Air Force later that afternoon...Sunday's schedule will be determined by Saturday's results.
The 11th-ranked Tritons suffered an 18-10 shellacking against No. 5 UC Santa Barbara Saturday, a game one result that surprised Harper...The Gauchos raced out to an early, 5-2, advantage and were up 8-4 at halftime...Any hopes UCSD had were erased in the third period when UCSB exploded for seven more goals and upped its lead to eight...Junior Josh Stiling rifled home four goals to pace the Triton offense.
WOMEN'S SOCCER STAYS PERFECT; CCAA ROAD TRIP LOOMS
On the heels of a perfect opening weekend of conference play, the No. 25 Women's Soccer team takes to the road for the first time, matching up with Cal State L.A. (2-1-1/1-1) Friday and Cal State San Bernardino Sunday (3-0-1/2-0)...Coach Brian McManus's Tritons sit 3-0 overall, 2-0 in CCAA action and are tied with Cal State San Bernardino atop the CCAA South table.
Two goals from senior Gabi Hernandez and a significantly-improved overall performance hoisted the Tritons past visiting San Francisco State, 3-0, last Friday...Hernandez got her first goal of the night and second of the season in the 20th minute, literally not having to move her feet while heading in a corner kick off the foot of fellow senior Hayley Johnson...Johnson and Alexa Enlow assisted on the final tally of the night as junior Rachel Leslie converted at the end of a commanding offensive possession for UCSD...The Tritons outshot the Gators, 16-6, and freshman keeper Kelcie Brodsky earned her first career shutout, stopping two shots.
UCSD outshot visiting Cal Poly Pomona, 14-8, and had most of the best chances but still needed a rebound goal by junior Casey Parisi, the first of her Triton career with just under 20 minutes remaining, to put away the game Broncos Sunday afternoon...On Parisi's score sophomore Kylie Hill played a Jessica Wi throw-in back to the senior midfielder...Wi fired a close range shot that CPP keeper Sarah Rohman turned away but Parisi was there to stuff the rebound home...Brodsky had a pair of saves, garnering her second consecutive whitewash.

MEN'S SOCCER RUNS WIN STREAK TO THREE; UNDEFEATED IN CCAA
After opening the 2012 season with four consecutive home contests, Coach Jon Pascale's Men's Soccer team takes its 3-1 record to a foreign pitch for the first time this fall, traveling to Cal State L.A. (2-2/1-1) Friday and Cal State San Bernardino (0-0-4/0-0-2) Sunday...The Tritons enter the week's play first by themselves in the CCAA South Division standings.
It wasn't easy, but UCSD finally broke through against a defensive-minded San Francisco State side last Friday, escaping with a 1-0 victory courtesy of a late goal from Adam Zernik...The senior from Palo Alto drove a free kick from just outside the box into the lower right corner at 83:08 to provide the margin for UCSD in the CCAA debut for both clubs...SFSU took 13 shots compared to just eight for the Tritons but junior Josh Cohen made four saves in racking up his second straight shutout.
The scenario was similar Sunday as UCSD again prevailed by a 1-0 score, using a second half tally to decide a tight contest...This time it was junior Tsuk Haroush heading home the game winner at 67:45, getting on the end of a corner kick by Zernik...Cohen was credited with just two saves but both were big ones as he collected his eighth career shutout.

UCSD MEN SECOND AT ASICS/UCI CROSS COUNTRY INVITATIONAL
Facing longer distances and more competition, not to mention warm and muggy conditions, Coach Nate Garcia's Cross Country teams came away with mixed results from last weekend's Asics/UCI Invitational...The Triton men, again led by junior Kellen Levy snagged second place in the 18-team field, scoring 82 pts. to finish just 26 behind winner Cal State San Marcos but ahead of all four Division I squads in the race...The UCSD women, battling a talented 14-team assemblage, wound up ninth, finishing with 243 pts. in a competition where four of the top five teams were Division I including powerful Arkansas and USC which went 1-2.
For the Triton men, Levy claimed ninth place, covering the 8K layout in 25:46.9...Freshman Tareq Alwafai was the next UCSD runner in, clocking 25:57.6 to place 16th, one slot and 1.4 seconds ahead of sophomore Mario Flores who seemed to relish the added distance after a sub-par performance in the shorter season opener eight days earlier...Rounding out the UCSD scorers were sophomore Tanner Collins (25th/26:06.2) and freshman Scott Acton (30th/26:18.9).
On the women's side, junior Chia Chang continued to be the boss, coming home 28th out of 168 runners, turning in a time of 18:38.5 for the 5K...Freshman Carolina Guzman continued her impressive early season showing, taking 45th in 19:05.8...Resurgent fifth year senior Elena Inouye was next across the line for UCSD, grabbing 56th in 19:15.6...Sophomores Dani Brabender (71st/19:30.4) and Michelle LeRoux (75th/19:34.8) were the fourth and fifth finishers for the Tritons...Both teams will be off this week before stepping back into action Sept. 22 at the Cal Baptist Invitational.
