POMONA, Calif. - The ninth-ranked UC San Diego women's soccer team scored four goals in the first half en route to pounding Cal Poly Pomona, 5-1, in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play Friday night at Kellogg Field.
UCSD remained undefeated on the season, improving to 6-0-0 overall and 5-0-0 in conference play. CPP fell to 2-4 on the season and is still winless in the CCAA at 0-4-0.
"Our first half performance was incredible," said head coach Brian McManus. "We were controlling the ball and our passing was tremendous. The second half was all about battling, defending and taking the pressure of the game."
Cassie Callahan put the Tritons on the board to begin the game with a header from the near post at the 2:33 mark.
"We got a brilliant goal in the first three minutes and that kind of set the tone," said McManus. "We put together about six nice passes and finally got the ball wide to Laura Gordon. She was able to push past the defender and sent a waist high pass to the near post. Cassie (Callahan) ran onto it and headed it at a crazy angle into the goal."
Callahan added an assist when she dropped a pass to Britnee Chesney to get the Tritons their second goal just 14 minutes into the game.
Jessica Wi and Hayley Johnson each chipped in a goal to push the Tritons' lead to 4-0 heading into halftime. Despite outscoring the Broncos by such a large margin, the teams matched each other with seven shots taken in the half.
The Broncos fired up their offensive pressure in the second half, out-shooting the Tritons 13-3. Aneska Alino got Pomona on the board after stealing the ball from the Tritons' defense in the right corner and scoring unassisted at 58:49.
Gabi Hernandez closed out the night's scoring when her long shot found its way off the hand and over the head of Cal Poly Pomona keeper Sarah Rohman.
UCSD goalie Kelcie Brodsky finished the evening with eight saves, while Rohman stopped three.
The Tritons return to the field on Sunday, Sept. 23 at San Francisco State. The CCAA match-up is slated for a 2 p.m. start and will be covered by live stats.
