Yang Shoots 69, Tritons In Fourth At Sonoma State Invite

SANTA ROSA, Calif. - Freshman Daniel Yang shot a 3-under par 69 in Monday's first round of the Sonoma State Invitational at Santa Rosa Golf and Country Club, helping lead UC San Diego into fourth place overall heading into Tuesday's third and final round.

Sonoma State leads the 13-team field comfortably, holding a 10-stroke advantage over its closest competitor with an 8-under 568 (279-289). Within three strokes of each other are second-place Hawaii-Hilo (295-283--578), third-place Cal State East Bay (295-284--579) and UCSD, which totaled a 5-over 581, shooting even-par 288 in the first round and 293 in the second.

Individually, Sonoma's Matt Medeiros leads with a 7-under par 137. He recorded a tournament-low 64 in the opening round and followed that with a 73 in round two. Teammate Brandon Lee is second (72-67--139) and three golfers are tied for third at 140.

Yang, a San Diego native from Westview High School, sits in a tie for sixth place after carding a 2-under 142 (69-73) over two rounds on the par-72, 6,733-yard layout. He is tied with three other players.

Sophomore Jay Lim, UCSD's top finisher at last week's Wildcat Classic, is currently tied for 19th with a 72-74--146, 2-over par. Jacob Williams is tied for 21st (3-over, 72-75--147), Clayton Yamaguchi is tied for 29th (4-over, 76-72--148) and Lewis Simon is tied for 34th (5-over, 75-74--149). 

Tuesday's third round gets underway with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
