Tritons Wrap Up Fall Season at Arena Meet

Tritons Topped at UC Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC San Diego dropped both ends of a men's and women's swimming and diving dual meet against UC Santa Barbara at Campus Pool on Friday afternoon.

The final point tallies were 170-128 in the men's meet and 178-122 in the women's in favor of the host Gauchos. The UCSD men and women each fell to an even 1-1, while the Gaucho men are now an identical 1-1 and the UCSB women are 3-1.

"We performed pretty well today, but we knew we would have to be great to win here, and we weren't," said UCSD men's head coach Matt Macedo. "I would give us about a B+. We could have swam better, but they were tough. All-in-all, the whole team was solid, but it was disappointing in that we felt it was a winnable meet. Our relays were not good, and that hurts a lot in a dual meet. On the positive side, this gets us ready for the type of competition we'll see at the Arena Invitational and later at the NCAA Championships."

Dane Stassi was the only multi-event winner on the day in the swimming events for the Tritons, sweeping the two butterfly distances for the second meet in a row to begin the year. Stassi first went a B-cut 1:48.75 in the 200, a time that would have put him in the NCAA Championships last season. He then swam 49.96, another consideration qualifier, to touch first in the 100. The Irvine native, looking poised for a breakout sophomore campaign, had already achieved consideration qualifiers in both events last Saturday, but lowered each mark.

"Those were two in-season lifetime bests for Dane, and I thought he laid it on the line," remarked Macedo. "He led the entire way in both races and really had to hang on to win the 200."

Junior captains Anji Shakya (200 free, 1:51.96) and Nicholas Korth (200 breast, 2:03.08) each had B-cut times in first-place individual finishes. Shakya's was fast enough to have put her in the national meet this past March.

UCSD swept the top three spots in both the diving events, with junior Luke Calkins winning both, followed by Adam Springer and Garet Webster.

Freshman Allyson Cohen collected her first collegiate event victory, placing first on the one-meter board (219.00) ahead of teammates Mishka Hulka and Natalie Mouzooni.

Sophomore Sierra Robbins took the 100 free by over a second, sprinting 52.62 to get under the consideration standard (52.73) and touch ahead of senior teammate Katherine Tse (53.67).

A ninth individual event winner for UCSD was Paul Li in the 200 free, as the freshman swam 1:41.49 for a B cut.

Senior captain Bethany Dong and sophomore Jaclyn Amog each made their season debuts for the Triton women after missing last week's season opener. They each swam to B-cut second-place finishes with Dong in the 1000 (10:30.08) and Amog s in the 100 fly in 57.08.

UCSD now has 12 days of preparation remaining for the 2012 Arena Invitational, to be held in Long Beach, Nov. 15-17.
