LA JOLLA, Calif. - Seattle Pacific got a goal from Heather Young just over 12 minutes into the game and made it stand up for the remainder of a 1-0 victory over BYU-Hawaii in an NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship First Round contest held at Triton Soccer Stadium on Thursday afternoon.

The third-seeded Falcons improve to 15-3-2 and advance to face second-seeded host UC San Diego this Saturday night, Nov. 10, in the NCAA Second Round. Kickoff at Triton Soccer Stadium is set for 6 p.m.

BYU-Hawaii, from Laie, Hawaii, and seeded sixth in the West, concludes its season at 10-5-3. The Seasiders were making just their third NCAA Division II Championship appearance.

The lone goal of the afternoon came at the 12:03 mark as Young, a sophomore forward, lofted a curling effort from around the top of the 18-yard box that traveled over BYUH goalkeeper Megan McCain's head and into the back of the net for her sixth goal of the season. Freshman Laura Moore was credited with her fifth assist.

Both teams also managed to hit the crossbar once. SPU's near-miss came less than 30 seconds before its goal as sophomore midfielder Annie Thomas found the woodwork with her left foot following a nice Falcon build-up.

BYU-Hawaii freshman McKenzie Evans later smacked her right-footed bullet from 35 yards off the crossbar with time running out in the 84th minute.

The Seasiders' best chance to equalize throughout the first 45 minutes came after 28:35, as Evans played junior teammate Brittney Evans through with a deft pass, only for junior SPU goalie Natalie Harold to deny Evans' low shot to the left corner with a diving save. Evans had another shot saved right after the interval, running onto a through ball down the right wing before poking it right to a charging Harold.

Seattle Pacific, meanwhile, was unable to find a clinching second score. The Falcons had junior forward Kaylie Winston shoot straight at McCain in the 43rd minute after a free kick into the penalty area by Alexa Diaz. Moore then shot in a rebound after teammate Riley Dopps' attempt was blocked by a defender early in the second half, but McCain saved again. In the 74th minute, leading SPU scorer Megan Lindsay had her nice dribbling run and left-footed shot result in a low save to the right corner.

Harold made five saves on the day for the Falcons, with McCain stopping eight shots of her own for BYUH. SPU held a 22-11 shot advantage as Lindsay had a game-high six shots with three on goal off the bench. Evans led the Seasiders with five shots.

On Saturday night, UCSD, ranked fifth in the country in Division II, and Seattle Pacific, will be meeting for the sixth time, and fifth in the NCAA postseason. The Tritons currently hold a 3-2 edge. Both teams are former Division II national champions, with UCSD in 2000 and 2001, and Seattle Pacific in 2008.

Ticket prices for the 2012 NCAA Division II West Regional are $8 for general admission and $5 for seniors and students with valid identification. Children under seven years of age are admitted free of charge. The first 100 UCSD students will also gain free entry into Saturday night's Second Round match, courtesy of Triton Tide.
