McMANUS, TRITONS OPEN FINAL FOUR THURSDAY IN GEORGIA
Playing at its second NCAA Final Four in the last three years, Coach Brian McManus's fifth-ranked Women's Soccer team will be looking for an eighth national title when it opens play Thursday at the NCAA Division II Championships against Midwest Region kingpin Grand Valley State (20-1-3) in Evans, GA...Defending national title winner St. Rose (NY) and West Florida go head-to-head in the other semi-final...The two prevailing teams will meet Saturday at noon (PST) for the national crown.
The Tritons (16-2-4) earned their trip to the Peach State with an overtime (PKs) triumph against Colorado School of Mines in last week's NCAA Quarterfinals...The last time UCSD reached the Final Four, it was knocked off, 4-0, by Grand Valley State in the title game after defeating St. Rose in the semis...The Tritons, champions of the CCAA, come in on an eight-game unbeaten streak with five-of-the-eight going to overtime and two to penalty kicks.
Under McManus, who boasts a 433-66-42 career record, UCSD has collected seven NCAA Championships, including two at the Division II level (2000 & 2001)...This year's side is dominated by the senior class of Britni Chesney, Danielle Dixon, Alexa Enlow, Laura Gordon, Gabi Hernandez, Hayley Johnson, Jessica Wi and Ellen Wilson...Johnson and Wilson have been four-year starters on the back line and all but Chesney and Gordon were members of the 2010 NCAA runner-up crew...Hernandez is tied with sophomore midfielder Cassie Callahan for the team lead with nine goals and another soph, Izzy Pozurama has eight...Starting in goal is freshman Kelcie Brodsky.
Last Tuesday, five Tritons earned Daktronics All-West Region recognition...Landing on the first team were Wilson, Johnson, Wi and Callahan while Hernandez was a second team selection.

MEN'S CAGERS HOME FOR PAIR OF CONFERENCE TILTS
The first full weekend of CCAA hoops is on the docket for Coach Chris Carlson's Men's Basketball team as Cal State L.A. (1-2/0-0) and Cal State Dominguez Hills (4-3/1-0) visit RIMAC Arena this Friday and Saturday...UCSD comes into the weekend 1-3 overall and 0-1 in league play after dropping its CCAA opener on the road last weekend.
Senior Justin Brue scored a career high 24 points, pulled down nine rebounds and had a pair of assists but it was not enough for UCSD to hold off host Cal State San Bernardino, which came from behind to down the Tritons, 90-82, in the conference opener for both clubs Saturday night...UCSD never trailed in the first half, pushing the lead as high 12, and went to the locker room with a three-point margin...San Bernardino grabbed the lead for the first time with 13:07 remaining and the Tritons never got it back...Brue shot at a blazing 75% (12-16), helping Carlson's charges to a noteworthy team rate of 52.3% but the Coyotes countered by hitting 57.9% of their attempts...Surprisingly, UCSD was able to make just 2-of-15 from long range and that number likely made the difference...The Tritons won the battle of the glass, 34-28, and turnovers were 11-9 in favor of the Coyotes...Brue got plenty of help offensively as junior point guard James McCann hit all nine of his free throws en route to a 21-pt., seven-assist evening, sophomore Brandon Blanchard tallied a career high 14 markers and Tyler McGrath added 12.
WOMEN HOOPSTERS HOST CSULA, CSU DOMINGUEZ HILLS
After getting its feet wet with three pre-season tournaments, first-year Coach Heidi VanDerveer's Women's Basketball team tips off the 2012-13 CCAA season at home this weekend with Cal State L.A. (4-0/1-0) and Cal State Dominguez Hills (1-3/0-1) coming to La Jolla...The Triton cagers are 2-5 after splitting a pair of games at last weekend's UCSD Thanksgiving Classic...They are the defending CCAA regular season champions and were pegged for second in the loop's pre-season coaches' poll.
In VanDerveer's home debut, the Tritons got nearly point-a-minute production from the senior backcourt tandem of Emily Osga (21 pts.) and Daisy Feder (19 pts.) in a 79-48 romp over Azusa Pacific in Friday night's first round of the Thanksgiving Classic...Osga was a perfect 7-of-7 from the floor and pulled down six rebounds...The pair scored UCSD's first dozen points as the Tritons raced to a 16-6 advantage from the opening tip...On the night, VanDerveer's outfit shot a solid 50.9% from the floor, including 10-of-17 from three-point range, and out-rebounded the Cougars, 39-27...Junior forward Erin Dautremont hit 6-of-9 from the field, contributing 13 points...All 13 Tritons who played scored and reserve guard Megan Perry pulled down a team high seven boards.
Twenty-four hours later, the Tritons let an apparent victory slip through their fingers---twice---falling, 74-66, to undefeated Tampa in double overtime...UCSD, which completely stifled the Spartans in the first half, led most of the way and seemed to have the upper hand in the final stretch of both regulation and the first overtime but could not seal the deal and were outscored by eight in the second extra session...The Tritons held Tampa to just 5-of-22 from the floor in the first half, forced nine turnovers and allowed a meager 13 points in building a nine-point edge at the break...They still owned a nine-point lead with 10:41 to go in regulation but the Spartans erased that with a two-minute binge that gave them the lead for the first time since the opening minutes...Dautremont had a big night, posting a double double with 20 points and 10 rebounds while connecting on 10-of-19 shots...Feder led UCSD with 21 points but was an uncharacteristic 6-of-20 in the field goal shooting department...Osga chipped in with 14.

VOLLEYBALL FACES TOP SEED BYU-HAWAII IN NCAA FIRST ROUND
For the third straight time under current Head Coach Ricci Luyties and the seventh consecutive year overall, the Women's Volleyball team is heading to the NCAA West Regional...This time, it will be as the eighth seed and the Tritons (20-10) will be heading to Laie, HI where they will face top-seeded and fifth-ranked BYU-Hawaii in Thursday's first round...The winner will square off against either Sonoma State or Western Washington...On the other side of the draw are Cal State San Bernardino, Grand Canyon, Central Washington and San Francisco State...The Regional championship match is slated for Saturday at 9:00 PM (PST).
Historically-speaking, UCSD has annexed seven national crowns, the most recent in 1997 (D-III)...The last time the Tritons won the West Region and reached the Elite Eight (their only trip at the D-II level) was 2001 under Duncan McFarland.
This year's squad is dominated by youth as Luyties' roster has no seniors...His starting setter is sophomore Amber Hawthorne (1,050 assists) and her top three offensive options are a pair of freshman outside hitters, Danielle Dahle (409 kills) and Sophie Rowe (227) and sophomore middle blocker Sara McCutchan (292)...Last week, Dahle was named first team All-CCAA while the remaining trio were all second team selections...Additionally, Dahle and McCutchan garnered honorable mention AVCA All-West Region accolades with Dahle also tabbed as the Region's Freshman of the Year.
