LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego softball team has signed three high school seniors to National Letters of Intent during the recent early signing period. The announcement was made by head coach Patti Gerckens.
Alayna Brenman, Ashley Chesnut and Bianca Devoto will join the Triton program as true freshmen beginning in the Fall of 2013.
"We are very excited about next year's incoming class," said Gerckens. "They are all very competitive athletes and will contribute to the program early on in their careers."
Brenman, a local out of Escondido, played as a right-handed pitcher and outfielder for the Titans of Poway High School.
"Alayna is a great athlete who will add depth on the mound and may even see time out in the field," said Gerckens.
Brenman had a breakout season in 2011 as the Titans were CIF Division I finalists. She earned Palomar League Pitcher of the Year honors and garnered All-CIF and all-league accolades after tying her school's record with 17 victories. Brenman plays travel ball with San Diego Legacy.
Off the field, Brenman has been a member of the National Honors Society and the California Scholarship Federation since 2011. This past season, she was named to the U-T San Diego's All-Academic Team.
"I've loved the UCSD campus since the first time I visited," said Brenman. "The coaches and the team are what made me ultimately choose UCSD. They were so kind and welcoming that I knew I wanted to be a Triton."
Chesnut, a first baseman and designated player, hails from San Jose and Archbishop Mitty High School, where she will finish her career as a four-year varsity letter winner for the Monarchs.
"Ashley is a big time hitter and will add the power we need to balance out the speed," said Gerckens.
Chesnut was an All-West Coast Athletic League (WCAL) Second Team honoree this past spring after helping her team to back-to-back CIF Central Coast Section Championships. The Monarchs won the WCAL title in 2010, 2011 and 2012. She plays travel ball with the San Jose Sting.
Also successful in the classroom, Chesnut has been a member of the National Honors Society and the California Scholarship Federation since 2009. She has also made the Principal's Honor Roll for the past four years.
"I felt that UCSD was the perfect fit for me because of the combination of rigorous academics and the outstanding softball program," said Chesnut. "I believe in the program and its values of hard work, supporting each other and working together towards a common goal.
A utility player, Devoto will be coming to La Jolla from Livermore and Granada High School.
"Bianca adds versatility in the infield and is a strong contact hitter," said Gerckens.
Devoto earned All-East Bay Athletic League recognition in 2010 and 2012. In 2010, she was the league's batting champion and was tabbed Granada's Offensive MVP with a .472 average. She plays travel ball with the All-American Sports Academy.
Also strong academically, Devoto has been on the Principal's Honor Roll since 2007. She has been a member of the California Scholarship Federation since 2010 and won an AP Scholar Award in 2012.
"I chose UC San Diego because it is a perfect fit for me athletically as well as academically," said Devoto. "After going to my first camp, I fell in love with the La Jolla atmosphere and with the softball program. I feel at home at UCSD and can't wait to become part of the Triton family."
UCSD, the 2011 national champion and 2012 national runner-up, opens its 2013 campaign at home on Wednesday, Jan. 23 with an exhibition doubleheader versus Concordia (4 p.m.). The regular season commences with a four-game set against Western Oregon at Triton Softball Field on Feb. 1 (1 p.m.) and Feb. 2 (12 p.m.).
