W-BASKETBALL TOPS SAN BERNARDINO; ON ROAD FOR TWO
Now just one game out of first place on the conference table, Coach Heidi VanDerveer's Women's Basketball team will leave the friendly confines of RIMAC Arena for CCAA road clashes at Cal Poly Pomona (3-5/1-3) and Humboldt State (7-3/3-1)...The Tritons come into the week 5-6 overall, 3-1 in CCAA play and tied with Humboldt State behind league-leading Chico State.
Sunday, VanDerveer's cagers avenged the only CCAA loss on their ledger, routing visiting Cal State San Bernardino, 57-34...The Tritons raced out of the gate, scoring the game's first seven points and were 16 clear (34-18) at halftime...The Coyotes never got closer than 14 in the second half as the UCSD defense held them to a paltry 25.9% from the floor on the night...The Tritons also owned the glass, outrebounding CSUSB, 44-27...Senior Daisy Feder was a force on both ends of the court, scoring a double double with games highs of 15 points and 13 boards while dishing out three assists for good measure...Fellow senior Emily Osga chipped in with 10 markers while sophomore McKennan Bertsch, in her first game back after an appendectomy, scored six points in 20 minutes, grabbed three rebounds and handed out one sublime assist, feeding a laser-like bounce pass to junior Erin Dautremont on the business end of a back door cut.

PAIR OF CCAA ROAD CONTESTS ON TAP FOR MEN'S BASKETBALL Still searching for its first conference win, Coach Chris Carlson's Men's Basketball team takes to the road for what figures to be one of its toughest treks of the season, playing at Cal Poly Pomona (8-0/4-0) and Humboldt State (5-3/1-3)...The Tritons, now 1-6 overall, are winless in four CCAA contests...The Cal Poly Pomona game can be heard live Thursday on ESPN 1700 AM with Craig Elsten calling the action.
Two of UCSD's league defeats have come at the hands of first place Cal State San Bernardino, the second a 73-58 decision last night at RIMAC Arena...The game was much closer than the final margin indicated...Buoyed by 52% shooting and six treys, the Tritons battled the Coyotes to a 35-35 draw in the first half and a short range hook by senior Justin Brue put them ahead, 45-44 with 13:25 to go...But Carlson's crew went stone cold down the stretch, going more than 10 minutes without a field goal as the game got out of hand...The backcourt duo of senior Tyler McGrath and junior James McCann paced the Tritons with 19 and 13 points respectively and 10 Brue rebounds and another nine by Drew Dyer allowed UCSD to best San Bernardino by 13 in that category.
Listen to Head Coach Chris Carlson's Sunday post-game interview.
SWIM/DIVE STARTS BIG MONTH SATURDAY VS. EAST BAY/GRAND CANYON
The Triton Swimming & Diving teams open a grueling January dual meet schedule this weekend, one that will include seven days of competition against 11 different opponents...They open by hostign Cal State East Bay and Grand Canyon on Saturday and Division I San Jose State Sunday...The Cal State East Bay and San Jose State encounters will be women only.
UCSD is coming off a lengthy training/holiday session, having last faced "live" opponents at the high caliber Arena Invitational in mid-November...At that event, where the Tritons were the only non-Division I team, the UCSD men placed third in a nine-team field and the women ninth out of 13.
VOLLEYBALL OPENS 2013 AT SANTA BARBARA TOURNAMENT
Coach Kevin Ring's Men's Volleyball team, coming off a 9-19 season that included victories over UCLA (No. 3), Long Beach State (No. 9) and at Hawaii, will open up the 2013 campaign this weekend at the Asics Invitational hosted by UC Santa Barbara...The Tritons will face a tough test right off the bat, hooking up with No. 5 Lewis Friday morning...That evening, UCSD will take on either UCLA or UCSB with Saturday's match-ups determined by Friday's results.
Ring will have most of last year's key players at his disposal...His top three hitters---senior Carl Eberts (335 kills), Vaun Lennon (293) and junior MB Sebastian Brady (172)---return along with the setting duo of Mike Brunsting (556 assists) and Garrett Dempsey (486)...Honorable mention All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation choice Chase Frishman, who boasts 455 career digs, is back for his senior season at the libero spot...Outside hitters Cheyne Hayes and Nick Iorfino and middle blockers Greg Smith and Fred Stahl figure to be in the mix for significant playing time.
