SOFTBALL SQUARES OFF WITH S.F. STATE AT HOME
Currently holding down third place (tie) in the CCAA standings, Coach Patti Gerckens’ Softball team will play its final regular season home series this weekend when San Francisco State (13-16/7-13) comes to town for doubleheaders Friday and Saturday…UCSD is 17-13 on the year, 13-7 in conference play and has won eight of its last 11 outings.
Statistically speaking, the Tritons are hitting .282 as a team with senior Nicole Spangler (.390) leading a parade of five regulars hitting over .300…Spangler also tops the club with 32 hits and eight doubles…Junior catcher Caitlin Brown has supplied the power with five of the Tritons’ eight home runs and a team best 25 RBIs…Freshman outfielder Callie Grant’s 19 runs scored is most on the roster and as is junior Emily McQuaid’s 14 stolen bases…In the pitching department, UCSD has limited opponents to a .249 batting average…Sophomore Kayla Hensel leads the way with eight wins, followed by junior Jennifer Manuel who has five, along with a 1.88 ERA…Freshman Lexi Edwards has whiffed 22 hitters.
BASEBALL STARTS SECOND HALF OF SEASON VS. CAL STATE EAST BAY
Trying to build on a 3-1 series victory over first place Cal State L.A. in its most recent diamond action, Coach Eric Newman’s Baseball team (15-12/10-10) renews CCAA hostilities this weekend when fifth place Cal State East Bay (22-8/12-8) visits La Jolla…The two clubs will play single games Thursday and Saturday with a doubleheader squeezed in Friday…The Tritons, who have wins in four of their last five, are part of a sixth place tie on the CCAA ladder.
On the 2013 stat sheet, seniors Danny Susdorf and Richard Seigel are the standouts offensively…Susdorf, who came into the season with a .391 career batting average, leads the Tritons in hitting (.365), hits (38), runs (29), doubles (12) and stolen bases (17)…Seigel, the squad’s starting first baseman is No. 1 in home runs (6), RBIs (23) and slugging pct. (.632)…Senior right hander Ryan Goodbrand has been the ace of the staff, racking up a 6-1 record to go with a 2.49 ERA and 45 strikeouts…Versatile freshman Troy Cruz is 1-1 on the mound with a 2.04 ERA, three saves and is hitting .328 while starting at second base when not on the mound.
POLO TO BATTLE THREE TOP TEN FOES IN HAWAIIAN TOURNEY
Riding a season best eight-game winning streak, Coach Brad Kreutzkamp’s 15th-ranked Women’s Water Polo squad flies to Honolulu this week for a testing four-day, five-game stint at the Hawaii Spring Break Tournament…On the docket are clashes with No. 6 San Diego State (Thu.), No. 4 Stanford (Fri.), No. 8 Hawaii (Sat.), UC Santa Barbara (Sat.) and conference rival Sonoma State (Sun.).
The young Tritons (no seniors on the roster) have been led in the scoring column by junior Sarah Lizotte with 48 goals…The next three are all freshmen---Alexis Wieseler (42), Julia Kirkland (27) and Jolene Giuliana (22)---with junior Melissa Bartow (22) rounding out the top five…Giuliana and Lizotte are 1-2 in assists with 35 and 33 respectively…Giuliana is also the pacesetter with 38 steals, followed by Lizotte (32) and Rachel Brooks (23)…Freshman goalie Courtney Miller has 190 saves in the cage.
BIG NAMES PROVIDE CHALLENGE FOR MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Coming off its second victory over USC this season, Coach Kevin Ring’s Men’s Volleyball team will now face two of the top five teams in the nation…On Friday, the No. 5 UCLA Bruins (10-8) visit La Jolla and Sunday afternoon, Ring’s spikers travel north to challenge No. 2 UC Irvine (17-5)…The Tritons, who moved to7-16 with the win over USC, lost home matches to both UCLA and Irvine earlier in the year.
Statistical leaders to date for UCSD include senior Carl Eberts (234) and sophomore Cheyne Hayes (175), who are 1-2 in kills, the duo of sophomore Garrett Dempsey (445 assists) and Mike Brunsting (395) who have shared setting duties, senior libero Chase Frishman with 166 digs and middle blockers Fred Stahl and Sebastian Brady who have accumulated 64 and 58 total blocks respectively…Brunsting (14) and Hayes (13) are first and second in the service ace column.
TRACK & FIELD HOSTS CAL-NEVADA CHAMPIONSHIPS
UCSD hosts the annual Cal-Nevada Track & Field Championships, featuring most of the top collegiate teams in the two states, this Friday and Saturday at Triton Track & Field Stadium…At last year’s event, hosted by Claremont, the Triton men placed eighth in a 19-team field and the women were 11th out of 20 squads…UC Santa Barbara (men) and San Diego State (women) are defending champions.
UCSD coming off of finals and prepping for Cal-Nevada, produced 11 first place performances last Saturday at the Ross and Sharon Irwin Collegiate hosted by Point Loma…The Triton women accounted for seven of those victories with five---Sydney Blakely (pole vault/12-0), Julia Windenthaler (triple jump/36-5.75), Eva Isaacs (shot put/42-6), Aletha Vassilakis (javelin/119-9) and Uchenna Agbahiwe (discus/131-6)---occurring in field events…On the track, sophomore Sabrina Pimentel powered home first in her specialty, the 800 (2:16.77), and Lauren Irish topped the field in the 400 hurdles (63.80).
On the men’s side, all four UCSD wins were recorded in the field…Seniors Ryan Eckert (shot put/49-9.75), Zach Nagengast (discus/151-9) and A.B. Shaheen (hammer/184-10) and junior Clint Rosser (pole vault/15-16) did the honors...Triton volunteer assistant coach Nick Howe, a two-time NCAA champion as an undergraduate, won the javelin with a heave of 236-1, nearly five feet further than his school record.
WOMEN’S TENNIS HOME FRIDAY VS. CAL STATE L.A.
The No. 27 Women’s Tennis team goes on the road to face NAIA Concordia Thursday and returns home the following afternoon to host former CCAA rival Cal State L.A…The Tritons come into the week 8-5…Lefty freshman Kyra Scott has been undefeated in her 12 dual matches at No. 2 singles and the No. 2 doubles unit of senior Jacquelyn Davis and freshman Paula Chou leads the team at 10-3).
TWO AT HOME THIS WEEK FOR MEN’S TENNIS
Coach Timmer Willing’s Men’s Tennis team hooks up with a pair of Division III opponents this week as DePauw (Wed.) and UC Santa Cruz (Thu.) call on the Tritons…Ranked 28th in Division II, the Tritons are 7-7 under their first-year coach but have struggled of late, recently going 1-4 during a five-match homestand…This week’s matches will be the first of four straight on the North Courts with Grand Canyon and Hawaii Pacific calendared next week…Senior Camill Salomon has been Willing’s No. 1 singles player, posting a 7-6 record at the top of the ladder…The No. 2 doubles tandem of junior Max Jiganti and sophomore Kona Luu has a 10-3 ledger.
ARIZONA SOJOURN ON TAP FOR WYDRA, GOLF TEAM
Coach Mike Wydra’s Golf team swings back into action today at the 54-hole Thunderbirds Invitational, hosted by Grand Canyon at the Wigwam Resort Gold Course (7,228 yds.) in Goodyear, AZ…Teeing it up for Wydra will be juniors Lewis Simon and Ryan Rankin, sophomore Jay Lim and freshmen Daniel Yang and Clayton Yamaguchi…The 17-team field will play 36 holes today and a closing 18 Tuesday.
CAMPBELL-KRUGER, GINESTET REPRESENT AT NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
Sophomore Adam Campbell-Kruger and junior Luc Ginestet, competing in epee, finished 23rd and 24th respectively at the 2013 NCAA Fencing Championships held last week in San Antonio Texas…Campbell-Kruger prevailed in six bouts while Ginestet earned four wins…Their combined performance as the only Triton qualifiers put UCSD 24th in the final team standings.
WOMEN’S CREW MAKES BIG NORTHWEST TRIP; CREW CLASSIC LOOMS
Continuing to demonstrate progress on a weekly basis, first-year Coach Colin Truex and the Women’s Rowing team travels to the Northwest this weekend for a head-to-head match-up with the past decade's dominant Division II power, Western Washington, on the Vikings’ home course at Lake Samish in Bellingham…Saturday, both teams will move south for the Cascade Sprints, on American Lake, outside Tacoma…Truex will send out varsity eights and fours for both events…The latter figures to include an eight-team, primarily Division II field.
Both the Triton men and women will be on the water in Mission Bay with full teams the following weekend for the annual San Diego Crew Classic.

It was announced last week that UCSD had won the 2013 NCAA Division II Presidents’ Award for Academic Excellence for achieving a four-year Academic Success Rate (ASR) of 90 percent or more…UCSD boasts an ASR of 94 percent, signifying the percentage of its student-athletes from the 2002-05 cohort that graduated within six years of original enrollment. For the second straight year, UCSD is the only California Collegiate Athletic Association school to earn the award.
The Men’s Water Polo team hauled in a surplus of academic awards last week…Seniors Brian Donohoe and Chris Barton, junior Tommy Friedrich, sophomore Danny Lorch and freshman Tiki Toplak were recognized by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) as members of its All-Academic team for 2012…Donohoe, Barton, Friedrich and Lorch were joined by senior Lance Curtiss and junior Josh Stiling on the Western Water Polo Association’s All-Academic team.
