LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's golf team will compete at the 2013 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships Monday and Tuesday, hosted by Cal State Stanislaus at Hunter Ranch in San Luis Obispo County.
Joining UCSD will be Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State East Bay, Cal State Monterey Bay, Cal State San Bernardino, Cal State Stanislaus, Chico State and Sonoma State.
The Tritons will be looking to better their third-place finish at the 2012 CCAA's, the team's best showing since joining the Division II ranks in 2001.
"This is the best team I've had in 10 years," said Wydra, now in his 33rd season leading the Tritons. "If we find the right combination of players and everyone is hitting on all cylinders at the same time, we could surprise some people."
Chico State is the reigning champion, shooting a three-round total of 846, 18-under par at Hunter Ranch. The Wildcats led wire-to-wire. Stanislaus placed second, also finishing below par with an 855, 9-under. UCSD was third with a 2-over 866, Monterey Bay was fourth (+4, 868), San Bernardino was fifth (+6, 870), East Bay was sixth (+8, 872), Sonoma placed seventh (+16, 880) and Dominguez Hills rounded out the field in eighth (+62, 926).
Individually, Lim tied for fourth as UCSD's top finisher last season, carding a 5-under 211 on the par-72, 6,741-yard Hunter Ranch layout. He shot a 72 and a 73 in Monday's opening rounds and then fired an impressive 66 in the third and final round, the lowest single-round score of any player during the event.
Eric Frazzetta of Chico State, Alex Sobstad from Cal State Monterey Bay and Kyle Souza out of Chico State all tied for first place in 2012, finishing 6-under with 210s, just one stroke ahead of Lim and Rob Damschen of Stanislaus.
UCSD has placed in the top-10 in all nine tourneys its has competed in this season. The Tritons took second at both the Skyhawk Classic Club Shootout in Palm Desert and the Thunderbirds Invitational in Arizona.
In the current national rankings, Cal State Monterey Bay is fourth, Cal State Stanislaus is 11th and Chico State is 25th. Sonoma State and UC San Diego are receiving votes.
At the conclusion of the tournament, awards will be handed out for MVP, Freshman of the Year, Newcomer of the Year and Coach of the Year.
