Golf Team Selected for NCAA Championships
Release: Friday 04/26/2013

LA JOLLA, Calif. - For the second consecutive season, UC San Diego has qualified for the NCAA Division II Golf Championships. The 80 teams and 32 individuals selected for postseason play were announced Friday afternoon by the NCAA.

UCSD will compete alongside 19 other squads at the South Central/West Regional, which will be held May 6-8 at The Home Course in DuPont, Wash., outside of Tacoma. The Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC), Saint Martin's University and Western Washington University will serve as co-hosts for the regional. The 54-hole event is also being supported by the Tacoma South Sound Sports Commission and the Washington State Golf Association.

"We are very excited to be heading to the NCAA's for the second straight season," said UCSD head coach Mike Wydra. "The team has been working towards this all year and it is great to see the hard work pay off."

The Tritons earned the No. 8 seed among 10 teams from the West Region. Also qualifying from the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) were league champion Cal State Monterey Bay, Cal State Stanislaus, Sonoma State, Chico State and Cal State East Bay. Western Washington, Grand Canyon, Hawaii Hilo and Dixie State round out the West Region contingent.

Traveling to Washington from the South Central Region will be Colorado School of Mines, Midwestern State, Abilene Christian, Cameron, Colorado-Colorado Springs, St. Edward's, Dallas Baptist, Colorado State-Pueblo, Incarnate Word and Western New Mexico.

Eight individual golfers, four from each region, will also be playing at The Home Course.

"We have seen several of these teams already this season, so we know the competition is going to be stiff," said Wydra. "If we can find the right combination of players that are all swinging strong at the same time, we'll be right in there."

The top-five placing teams, as well as the top-two individuals not competing with a team, at the South Central/West Regional will advance to the NCAA Finals May 20-24 at Hershey Country Club (East Course) in Hershey, Pa.

Three other sites will host regional competition for the Atlantic/East, Central/Midwest and South/Southeast Regions.

The Tritons have placed in the top-10 at all 10 tournaments they have competed in this season. Most recently, they took fifth at the CCAA Championships at Hunter Ranch Golf Course in Paso Robles. UCSD was led by freshman Clayton Yamaguchi's third-place finish, the top showing by any Triton this season.

UCSD finished 14th of 20 teams at the 2012 NCAA Division II Central/West Regional, held at the Wigwam Resort in Arizona. It was the team's first postseason appearance since 2007. Four of the five Tritons that competed last season are still with the team, including Marc Herrmann, Jay Lim, Lewis Simon and Jacob Williams.
