Gritting out an ultra-tight finish in Saturday’s repechage and an early disadvantage in Sunday’s grand final, the Women’s Crew varsity eight grabbed third place at the NCAA Division II Championships in Indianapolis last weekend…The Tritons, an at-large selection, were ranked sixth coming into the competition, their first NCAA appearance since 2008.

First-year Coach Colin Truex’s outfit opened racing at Eagle Creek Park Friday by finishing third to top-ranked Barry and No. 4 Central Oklahoma in heat action...That result put them into Saturday’s repechage where they needed a top two run to reach Sunday’s grand final which included automatic qualifiers Barry and Nova Southeastern (No. 3)…In a race where conditions were difficult and all three teams went to the front at some point, UCSD “out-toughed” second-ranked Western Washington and Central Oklahoma down the stretch to grab one of the prime time Sunday slots…Less than two and a half seconds separated the top three finishers.

In Sunday’s grand final, Western Washington powered out early in an attempt to match Barry and Nova Southeastern…Strategically, the Tritons sat back but by the midway juncture had already pulled even with the flagging Vikings and gradually pulled away to capture third by a comfortable 4.5 second margin…In more favorable conditions, they clocked 6:54.69 knocking more than 40 seconds off both their heat and repechage times…Nova Southeastern edged Barry for both the V-8 and overall NCAA team championship.

Coxswain Catherine Sheffler guided the boat which was powered by Shruti Kamath, Alyssa Dixon-Word, Kelsey Henck, Michelle Robbins, Ashley Travaglione, Rachel Schneiderman, Kelly Peterson and Claire Duesdieker. Click here for comprehensive Women’s Crew coverage.

“The future” seemed an apt phrase to describe the focus of Coach Zach Johnson’s Men’s Rowing team’s trek to Rancho Cordova last weekend for the annual Intercollegiate Rowing Assn. (IRA) Championships…Johnson’s young, inexperienced varsity eight---Zach Antunes, Zack Attaran, Mark Bennett, John Buda, Scott Kennedy, Brendan Stainfield, Forrest Sundquist, Kyle Wilson and coxswain Sean Dougherty---may have wound up 23rd in the power-packed, D-I dominated field but lowered its time in every one of the four rounds of competition, lopping off more than 12 seconds from opening to closing races.

The Triton junior varsity eight also found the going tough, settling for seventh place in the third level final Sunday but like their varsity brethren were the only non-Division I entry in the field. …For full Men’s Crew re-caps, click here.

This week’s edition of Triton Talk, UCSD’s online radio show hosted by Craig Elsten, is scheduled to feature interviews with coaches Brad Kreutzkamp (women’s water polo) and Zach Johnson (men’s crew) as well as junior Kelly Peterson from Women’s Crew…The show will be posted Wednesday afternoon at ucsdtritons.com.

A five-time NCAA Division II champion and perhaps the greatest sprinter in UCSD history, Daniel Perdew has been elevated to a full-time assistant position on the Triton Swimming & Diving staff after serving in a part-time role since 2011…A  native of LaVerne, CA out of Damien High School, Perdew won the NCAA 100 freestyle three times and NCAA 50 freestyle twice…A 2010 UCSD graduate, he is the school record holder in both events (50 free/19.69 & 100 free/43.30).
