NEW ORLEANS - The UC San Diego track and field program had seven student-athletes earn 2013 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic honors, the organization announced Wednesday.
In addition, both the UCSD men’s and women’s squads were recognized as 2013 Division II All-Academic Teams by the USTFCCCA for having a cumulative team grade-point average of 3.00 or higher.
Benjamin Berthet (3.35 GPA, physiology and neuroscience major) and fellow pole vaulter Clint Rosser (3.96, environmental engineering) were named on the men’s side, made up of 210 student-athletes in all from 74 institutions. UCSD had the most men qualify from within the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), as Cal State L.A., Cal State Stanislaus, Chico State and Humboldt State managed one each.
Lorato Anderson (3.76, literature/writing), Sydney Blakeley (3.26, communication), Chantia Justice (3.57, psychology), Sabrina Pimentel (3.35, human biology) and Kristin Sato (3.47, cognitive science) were included among 384 women from 92 programs.
Anderson and Pimentel were the only repeat honorees from 2012. The other five Tritons are all first-timers. UCSD had seven individual representatives in 2012 as well after three, six and 10 over the previous three years, respectively, since 2009.
To qualify for USTFCCCA All-Academic distinction, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.25 and achieved an NCAA automatic or provisional qualifying standard for the NCAA Championships in either indoor or outdoor seasons.
The Triton men posted a team GPA of 3.19 to become one of 42 squads recognized, and the only one from the CCAA. Johnson C. Smith (N.C.) had the highest combined GPA in Division II at 3.448.
The women came in at an identical 3.19 among 92 teams that qualified. Humboldt State and San Francisco State joined UCSD from the CCAA. Missouri S&T produced the top mark at 3.66.
Both the Triton men’s and women’s teams were rewarded for the third successive year and fifth time in the last six.
Pimentel, Rosser and Sato represented UCSD at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Pueblo, Colo., in May.
