Emily Osga Named CCAA Nominee for NCAA Woman of the Year Award
Release: Tuesday 07/31/2013
by UCSD

LA JOLLA, Calif. - Former UC San Diego women's basketball player Emily Osga has been chosen by the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) as one of its 2013 nominees for the prestigious NCAA Woman of the Year Award. The announcement was made Tuesday by the conference.

The NCAA established the Woman of the Year Award in 1991 to celebrate the achievements of women in intercollegiate athletics. Now in its 22nd year, the award is unique as it recognizes not only the athletics achievements of outstanding young women, but also their academic success, community service and leadership.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must have earned a varsity letter in an NCAA-sponsored sport and must have completed eligibility in their primary sport.

Osga joins Stephanie Jimenez, a former softball pitcher for Cal State Dominguez Hills, as this year's nominees from the CCAA. They are among more than 140 student-athletes representing multiple sports across NCAA Divisions I, II and III that have been nominated as 2013 Woman of the Year candidates by their conferences and by independent schools.

A total of 455 student-athletes were nominated by their respective institutions this year. From that pool, each conference selected one or two individuals as its representative(s).

Osga played a major role in the success of UCSD's women's basketball program during her four years. A San Diego native out of Patrick Henry High School, she helped lead the Tritons to four straight CCAA Tournament berths and three NCAA postseason appearances. A three-time All-CCAA First Team pick, Osga averaged 12.4 points and 5.2 rebounds per game over the 2012-13 season. While starting all 33 of the team's contests at guard, she recorded the 1,000th point of her career and led the CCAA in three-point field goal percentage.

A human biology major, Osga earned several academic awards during her senior campaign, including Capital One Academic All-District and CCAA All-Academic accolades. She was a UCSD Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete Award winner and was tabbed UCSD's Outstanding Senior Student-Athlete at the conclusion of the 2012-13 academic year.

Osga has also been active in several community service endeavors including Swim with Mike to support scholarships for disabled athletes, Stop Hunger Now food bank packaging, volunteer work at the VA hospital and beach cleanups.

In August, the NCAA Woman of the Year selection committee will name the top 10 nominees from each of the three NCAA divisions. In September, the committee will select the top nine finalists (three from each division). The NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics will then vote to determine the 2013 Woman of the Year, which will be announced on Oct. 20.
