Men's Soccer Picked to Place Fourth in CCAA South
Release: Monday 08/23/2013
by UCSD

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - The UC San Diego men’s soccer team has been picked by league head coaches to place fourth in the 2013 South Division race in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) preseason poll, released Friday.

The Tritons are coming off of a 2012 campaign in which they went 9-4-4 overall and 8-3-4 in CCAA play, narrowly missing out on a CCAA Championship berth. They earned 33 points to sit behind South favorite Cal State Dominguez Hills with 51 points and five first-place votes, and No. 21 Cal State L.A. (four first-place votes) and Chico State (three first-place votes) at 48 points apiece. UCSD also picked up two votes to qualify for the CCAA Championship.

Sonoma State has been tabbed as the top contender in the North with 57 points from seven first-place votes. Defending CCAA champion Cal State Stanislaus is next with 55 points and the remaining five first-place nods.

Cal State Dominguez Hills (five) leads a total of six squads to attract consideration to take the 2013 league crown.

In 2013, UCSD will be in search of its first CCAA Championship appearance since 2005. The event returns to the campus of Cal State Stanislaus and Warrior Stadium. The format calls for the two division winners, plus the two next-best teams, regardless of division, to square off in semifinal action on Friday, Nov. 8. The final will be played on Sunday, Nov. 10, with a spot in the NCAA Championship at stake.

UCSD returns the heart of a defense ranked No. 1 nationally in the NCAA Division II a year ago in both goals-against average (0.44) and shutout percentage (0.71), with 12 clean sheets among its 17 matches. The Tritons surrendered a mere eight goals all season, with just six in CCAA play. The senior trio of goalkeeper Josh Cohen and center backs Alec Arsht and Gavin Lamming will feature heavily in sixth-year head coach Jon Pascale’s plans. Cohen was the 2012 CCAA Most Valuable Defensive Player, while he and Arsht both garnered Daktronics All-America recognition.

Returners Matthew McClure, Nick Roberts and redshirt freshman Brett Sampiere will be among the players vying to fill out the remainder of the back four. The offensive attack was bolstered when midfield general and second-team All-CCAA pick Andisheh Bagheri decided to use up his final season of college eligibility while beginning graduate work at UCSD. He is joined by the likes of fourth-year Tritons Tsuk Haroush, Taylor Wirth and Cory Wolfrom, and Will Pleskow among others.

All 12 CCAA squads will kick off their 2013 season on Thursday, Sept. 5, and begin league activity the following Friday, Sept. 13. UCSD gets things going in Riverside at California Baptist on Sept. 5, before facing crosstown rival Point Loma Nazarene in its home opener at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7, at Triton Soccer Stadium.
