No. 3 Women's Soccer Unanimous Choice to Top CCAA South
Release: Friday 08/27/2013
by UCSD

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - For a third year in a row, the third-ranked UC San Diego women’s soccer team is league head coaches’ preseason favorite to top the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) South Division. The 2013 poll was released on Tuesday.

Just like in 2011, head coach Brian McManus’ Tritons are the unanimous choice, with all 11 opposing coaches picking them to win the division. Coaches are not allowed to include their own sides in the poll. UCSD accumulated 61 points to place above Cal State L.A., in second with 42 points and the remaining first-place vote.

Identical to the Tritons, Cal State Stanislaus is the North favorite for a third year running, collecting 59 points from nine first-place nods, with No. 18 Sonoma State a close second (53 points, three first-place votes).

UCSD, Cal State Stanislaus and Sonoma State each received the maximum 11 votes to be among the four teams to qualify for the CCAA Championship. Six coaches have Stanislaus winning the 2013 league title, while three chose UCSD, and Sonoma State (two) and Cal State L.A. (one) earned the other votes.

UCSD has topped the CCAA’s South Division in 11 of its 13 seasons as a league member, and has never missed a CCAA Championship, participating in 13 straight installments since its conference debut in 2000.

The Tritons went 17-3-4 overall and 11-2-2 in CCAA play a year ago, lifting a record eighth conference banner before navigating their way through a West Region crown and finally dropping a 1-0 decision to West Florida in the NCAA Division II Championship final.

McManus lost 10 seniors from that squad, including seven starters. Returning to the lineup are All-American midfielder Cassie Callahan, fellow junior Izzy Pozurama at forward, redshirt sophomore defender Michelle Yasutake and sophomore Kelcie Brodsky in goal. Rachel Leslie is also back for a fourth and final season in a Triton uniform.

At No. 3, UCSD opens the new campaign with its highest preseason national ranking since beginning 2011 at No. 2. The Tritons also entered that season as the previous year’s NCAA runners-up.

The 2013 CCAA Championship returns to the campus of Cal State Stanislaus and Warrior Stadium. The format calls for the two division winners, plus the two next-best teams, regardless of division, to square off in semifinal action on Friday, Nov. 8. The final will be played on Sunday, Nov. 10, with a spot in the NCAA Championship at stake.

Nine CCAA squads kick off their 2013 season on Thursday, Sept. 5, with all 12 beginning league activity the following Friday, Sept. 13. UCSD jumps right in with back-to-back marquee home match-ups in primetime against nationally-ranked West Region foes in No. 21 Seattle Pacific on Sept. 5 and No. 12 Western Washington on Saturday, Sept. 7. Both tilts have 7 p.m. start times at Triton Soccer Stadium.
