VOLLEYBALL OFF TO BLAZING START; HOSTS TOURNAMENT FRIDAY, SATURDAY
Undefeated after sweeping through last weekend’s Coyote Classic in San Bernardino, Coach Ricci Luyties’ 22nd-ranked Women’s Volleyball team (4-0) returns to RIMAC Arena to host the eight-team UCSD Invitational this Friday and Saturday…Using a pre-determined schedule format, the Tritons will face Cal Baptist and Point Loma on day one while taking on Fresno Pacific and Alaska Anchorage day two.
UCSD knocked off two ranked teams, No. 24 Central Washington and No. 13 Regis, in San Bernardino and junior middle blocker Sara McCutchan made the all-tournament team, recording 34 kills, six aces and nine blocks… Luyties also got consistently strong performances from junior setter Amber Hawthorne (81 assists/5 aces), sophomore outside hitters Danielle Dahle and Sophie Rowe and senior libero Brittany Lombardi (57 digs)…For more Women’s Volleyball news, click here.
MEN’S SOCCER OPENS UP 2-0; CCAA PLAY TO BEGIN FRIDAY AT DOMINGUEZ HILLS
Looking to build on a 2-0 non-conference record, Coach Jon Pascale’s Men’s Soccer team opens CCAA play this Friday at pre-season league favorite Cal State Dominguez Hills and tangles with Cal State L.A. two days later, also on the road…Pascale and Co. overcame a 1-0 deficit and a 35-minute man-down situation to top Cal Baptist, 2-1 (OT), in their season opener last Thursday…Senior Alessandro Canale scored the equalizer and senior Andisheh Bagheri netted a PK for the game winner…The Tritons pummeled the opposing goal with 18 shots (goals by Tsuk Haroush and Jacob Valadez) and senior keeper Josh Cohen pitched a shutout in Saturday’s, 3-0, home triumph over Point Loma…For more info on Men’s Soccer, click here.

WOMEN’S SOCCER SPLITS OPENING WEEK CONTESTS; CCAA PLAY LOOMS
The No. 3-ranked Women’s Soccer team will bring a 1-1 mark into the beginning of conference play this weekend…Coach Brian McManus’s young side escaped with a 2-1 victory over No. 12 Seattle Pacific last Thursday, overcoming a shaky first half to erase a 1-0 shortfall after the break with goals from Kiera Bocchino and Cassie Callahan…Despite a much better overall showing, UCSD dropped a 1-0 stunner two nights later against No. 22 Western Washington as the Vikings slipped in the game-winner with 1:08 remaining in regulation after a tangle-up in the box…Both contests were at Triton Soccer Stadium…In the season opener, McManus had four freshmen in the starting lineup along with only four players who had started during the 2012 season…UCSD begins CCAA activity on the road Friday at Cal State Dominguez Hills and moves over to Cal State L.A. Coach Denny Harper’s No. 11 Men’s Water Polo team heads to Claremont this weekend where it will faced Claremont Friday and then both Pomona-Pitzer and No. 1-ranked USC in a three-hour span Saturday…The Tritons, who don’t have a single senior on their roster, split four games at last weekend’s 11-team Triton Invitational…Saturday, junior Matt Michalko racked up three goals as UCSD opened up an 11-3 lead before coasting home, 12-8, over Redlands…They then gave No. 4 Cal a fight before succumbing, 13-10, despite four goals from junior Tommy Friedrich…Soph Jeff Jarvis rifled home five goals in a 12-3 Sunday morning romp over Cal Lutheran and UCSD closed out the weekend with a 16-6 defeat at the hands of No. 2 UCLA …For the latest Men’s Water Polo news, click here.

Stepping up in class, the Cross Country team travels to the Inland Empire for this Saturday’s UC Riverside Invitational on the Highlanders’ campus course…It will feature a predominantly Division I field with a smattering of CCAA teams included and for the Tritons comes on the heels of a triumphant season-opening performance in last Friday’s UCSD Opener…Coach Nate Garcia saw both teams win handily, the women outpointing runner-up Point Loma, 20-70, and the men topping second place Mesa College, 20-40…Both squads had 2-3-4-5 individual finishes with junior Madison Tanner pacing the women, posting a career best 15:38.7 over the 2.5 mile course and senior Kellen Levy clocking 21:39.9 while finishing second in the four-mile men’s event….The women will extend to 5K this week and the men 8K...For complete cross country coverage, click here.
