Callahan Named CCAA Player of the Week
Release: Tuesday 09/17/2013

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - UC San Diego standout midfielder Cassie Callahan was named on Tuesday afternoon as the Wilson/California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women’s Soccer Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 9-15.

The award marked the first weekly conference recognition for a Triton student-athlete of the 2013-14 season, and the second of Callahan’s career. The junior All-American and area product out of Coronado (Coronado HS) also earned the distinction as a freshman for the week of Sept. 12-18, 2011.

Callahan tallied seven points offensively from three goals and an assist, including both game-winning strikes, to lead UCSD to a pair of divisional road victories as the Tritons began defense of their CCAA crown over the weekend. She first converted a 61st-minute penalty kick for the lone score in a 1-0 shutout of Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson on Friday night.

Callahan then turned in her second career two-goal brace in a come-from-behind 3-1 defeat of Cal State L.A. She provided the through-ball assist on fellow junior tri-captain Izzy Pozurama’s 49th-minute equalizer before heading in both the game-winner (52:34) and the clincher (70:18) to send UCSD (3-1, 2-0 CCAA) back atop the CCAA South Division with the full six points through two matches.

Over four games, Callahan already has four goals, including all three Triton game-winners, and one assist for nine total points. She is tied for second in the CCAA in goals scored and tied for 15th nationally in the NCAA Division II.

UCSD, which saw its National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) ranking move down from No. 20 to No. 23 earlier Tuesday despite the weekend sweep, concludes a season-long four-match road stretch to begin the CCAA portion of its 2013 schedule at Chico State and Cal State San Bernardino this week.
