TRITONS-LMU BATTLE IN MARQUEE POLO MATCH-UP WEDNESDAY
Aiming to rebound from a taxing weekend in Northern California, the 11th-ranked Men’s Water Polo team returns to Canyonview Pool Wednesday to hook up with long-time WWPA rival and eighth-ranked Loyola Marymount…It will be the first of three home contests for Coach Denny Harper’s squad this week as Navy comes to town Friday and No. 6 UC Santa Barbara visits Saturday.
The Tritons come into the week 5-6 after going 1-3 at last weekend’s NorCal Invitational in Berkeley…The tourney got off to a rocky start for UCSD with a lopsided loss to UC Santa Barbara and a second defeat against No. 16 Concordia…Harper & Co. bounced back quickly, scoring the first eight goals in a 15-7 romp over No. 20 Air Force Sunday morning…Juniors David Higginson and Matt Michalko both posted hat tricks…The Tritons closed out the tourney by droppng an 11-10 OT decision to No. 15 Santa Clara...To get up-to-date Water Polo news, click here.
1,002…Number of games coached at UC San Diego by Men’s Water Polo Head Coach Denny Harper who has 576 wins.
EIGHTH-RANKED VOLLEYBALL SUFFERS FIRST LOSS; HEADS BACK TO NORCAL
After extending it season-opening win streak to a record-tying nine matches and then suffering its first loss of 2013, the No. 8 Women’s Volleyball team continues its harsh seven-match conference road march at Cal State San Bernardino (6-4/2-0) Wednesday and then on to Cal State Stanislaus (4-7/1-2) and Chico State (6-4/3-0) this weekend…Coach Ricci Luyties’ club is now 9-1on the year and .500 in CCAA play through two games.
The Tritons hit .309 and out-scored San Francisco State, 75-51, while recording a three-set sweep of their hosts last Friday…Sophomore setter Heidi Sierks, getting her first start, celebrated with a double double (34 assists/14 digs) and sophomore outside hitters Danielle Dahle (13) and Sophie Rowe (12) combined for 25 kills in the win…Twenty-four hours later, UCSD won game one against No. 18 Sonoma State but things went downhill from there in a 3-1 loss…Dahle pounded 15 kills, soph middle blocker Kameron Cooper added 15 and the Tritons racked up 15 aces…For complete volleyball updates, click here.
TWO ROAD WINS BOLSTER MEN’S SOCCER; HOME FRIDAY VS. HUMBOLDT STATE
Sporting a 4-1-1 overall mark and 2-1-1 in CCAA play after four conference-opening road outings, Coach Jon Pascale’s Men’s Soccer team is at Triton Soccer Stadium this weekend to host Humboldt State (3-2-1/1-2-1) Friday and Sonoma State (4-1-1/3-1) Sunday...With seven points, Pascale's side is one point behind CCAA South Division-leading Cal State Dominguez Hills...Sonoma State tops the North Division.
The Tritons swept both of their games last week in nearly identical fashion…Friday, against No. 14 Chico State, senior Taylor Wirth scooped up an errant Wildcat clearing pass, put it in the back of the net at 27:55 and it proved to be enough for a stout UCSD defense in a 1-0 victory…Two days later at Cal State San Bernardino, the score was the same and the timing nearly identical as senior defender Gavin Lamming headed a Jacob Valadez corner kick home in the 27th minute…Senior keeper Josh Cohen was in goal for both shutouts and now has 15 in his career.
WOMEN’S SOCCER KEEPS CCAA SLATE CLEAN; CONFERENCE HOME OPENER FRIDAY
After playing its first four conference games on the road, the 3-1-2 Women’s Soccer team returns home this weekend, hosting Humboldt State (3-3/1-3) Friday and Sonoma State (5-0-1/3-0-1) Sunday…The 23rd-ranked Tritons came away with a pair of draws last weekend, letting a 2-0 advantage slip away in a 2-2 tie at Chico State Friday and deadlocking at 1-1 with Cal State San Bernardino Sunday after again having the edge early…The two ties extended UCSD’s regular season conference road unbeaten string to 30 games and puts them in the early lead in the CCAA South Division standings...Sonoma State is tied with Cal State Stanislaus for the No. 1 slot in the North.
All four goals at Chico came in the second half…The Tritons struck first with a blast by junior Kylie Hill on a feed from Cassie Callahan and added an own goal shortly thereafter…The Wildcats tied the game with just over two minutes left in regulation…Sunday, freshman Jamie Benedetto registered her first collegiate goal, tapping in a cross from junior Izzy Pozurama just 24 seconds into the game…For more Women’s Soccer updates, click here.
THE WORD…From Women’s Soccer Coach Brian McManus in regard to last Friday’s 2-2 tie at Chico State…
“I was happy to get out of there with a draw. At the end of the second half and early in overtime, we were getting battered. If it was a boxing match, the referee would have stopped it.”
BIG MINNESOTA RACE ON TAP FOR CROSS COUNTRY
Coach Nate Garcia’s Cross Country team goes halfway across the country this weekend, trekking to Minneapolis for Saturday’s annual Roy Griak Invitational...Garcia will be sending his top eight men’s and women’s finishers from the recent UC Riverside Invitational to the Midwest with the remainder of the squad staying local for the Cal State San Bernardino Invitational…Both races will cover 8K on the men’s side with the women going 6K…The Griak event will be run on the University of Minnesota’s Les Bolstad Golf Course and feature a huge, 35-40 team field in the Division II race…Both Triton squads “received votes” in the most recent national polls…For more Cross Country news, click here.
