W-VOLLEYBALL FINALLY HOME—FACE EAST BAY FRIDAY IN REIS CUP MATCH-UP
Now riding a four-match winning streak, Coach Ricci Luyties’ Women’s Volleyball team finally returns to RIMAC Arena after playing seven consecutive road games to open CCAA play…The No. 12 Tritons are 13-2 overall, 5-2 in league action and sit tied for third in the conference standings as they prepare to host Cal State East Bay (6-9/2-5) and Cal State Monterey Bay (11-4/5-2) this weekend…Friday night will be the first annual Reis Cup, honoring former UCSD standout Karen Reis (’09) who died tragically in December of 2011.
Sophomores Heidi Sierks (55 assists), Danielle Dahle (18 kills/13 digs) and Sophie Rowe (18 kills/14 digs) produced some big numbers but UCSD had a rally late to escape with a 3-2 (25-17, 25-19, 24-26, 28-30, 15-7) triumph at Cal Poly Pomona last Thursday night…Forty-eight hours later in Arcata, the Tritons struggled a bit again but prevailed in four sets…Rowe and middle blocker Sara McCutchan (.591 pct.) both chalked up 15 kills, Sierks dished out 49 assists and senior digging machine Brittany Lombardi accounted for 25…Junior opposite Caitlin Brenton filled up the stat sheet with eight kills, seven blocks and three aces…Click here to get your Women’s Volleyball fix.
FIRST PLACE MEN’S SOCCER STARTS LONG HOME STAND FRIDAY
Playing some of the best soccer in recent team history, Coach Jon Pascale’s Men’s Soccer squad comes home for the start of a regular season-closing stretch that will see it play seven of its final eight contests at Triton Soccer Stadium…That favorable segment of the schedule begins Friday against Cal State San Bernardino (4-6-2/2-6) and continues Sunday against Chico State (8-2/6-2), as teams begin jockeying in earnest for CCAA post-season berths …The Tritons return to La Jolla sporting an overall mark of 8-1-1, have won six straight, all by shutouts and have ascended to No. 10 in the nation, UCSD’s highest ever Division II ranking…Pascale’s side is 6-1-1 in conference play and leads the CCAA South Division, one point up on Chico State.
Senior Cory Wolfrom scored for the second time in two games Friday, helping lift the Tritons to a 2-0 road win at Cal State Stanislaus…Wolfrom’s tally (from junior Brandon Bauman) came in the first half and senior Andisheh Bagheri finished off the Warriors with an unassisted strike after the interval…Sunday, senior keeper Josh Cohen needed to stop just one shot in recording his 19th career shutout, 2-0, at Cal State East Bay…Bauman, who has a team high five on the year, assisted on both Triton goals, which came 1:32 apart…Junior Alessandro Canale recorded his fourth at 27:12 and senior midfielder Alec Arsht collected his first moments later…For more Men’s Soccer information, click here.
583:59…Current streak of consecutive shutout minutes/seconds posted by the No. 10 UC San Diego Men’s Soccer team
31…Number of times that the UC San Diego Women’s Volleyball team has made the NCAA Tournament (Division II & III) in its 32 years of existence.
WOMEN’S SOCCER LOOKS FOR TURNAROUND WITH START OF HOME STINT
Trying to right one of the least productive runs in Coach Brian McManus’s phenomenal head coaching career, the Women’s Soccer team comes home to host Cal State San Bernardino (8-2-1/6-1-1) Friday night and Chico State (4-5-1/2-5-1) Sunday afternoon…The Tritons, looking to reverse a three-game losing streak, have gone winless in five straight and are now 3-4-3 overall and 2-3-3 in conference…That leaves them fifth in the CCAA South Division and facing a serious uphill climb to get back into the conversation regarding the top spot in the division…They trail first place CSUSB by 10 points in that department but are just two out of the final CCAA Tournament slot.
Speed did the Tritons in Friday night in Turlock as a fleet Cal State Stanislaus side raced past McManus & Co., 4-1…The win by the No. 9 Warriors snapped UCSD’s 30-match regular season road unbeaten skein…Junior Kylie Hill notched the lone UCSD goal…It was another story Sunday as Cal State East Bay scored late in regulation to tie and early in overtime to hand the Tritons a disappointing, 2-1, defeat…UCSD took control early when junior standouts Cassie Callahan and Izzy Pozurama combined for the latter’s second score of the campaign in the 16th minute…The host Pioneers netted the equalizer at 83:53 and the game-winner 1:48 into OT for their first-ever victory over the Tritons…Click here for more Women’s Soccer news.
THE WORD…From Men’s Soccer Coach Jon Pascale on his team’s defensive prowess:
“We certainly emphasize it in training and it eventually becomes a mentality. All 11 players are involved when we don’t have the ball. Our mantra is ‘give the other team no easy looks.’ The guys have bought in 100% and it’s been successful. That buy-in is the biggest part—without that, it doesn’t work.”
CROSS COUNTRY TO HOST STRONG FIELD FOR TRITON CLASSIC SATURDAY
With a week layoff in hand after an impressive outing at the Roy Griak Invitational two weeks ago, Coach Nate Garcia’s Cross Country teams should be in fine tune for their biggest home event of the season, this Saturday’s annual Triton Classic… Off the Griak race, the Triton men are now ranked 18th nationally and the women are just outside the rankings…Garcia, whose teams both turned in first place finishes at last year’s event, is expecting around 15 teams per gender at this fall's Classic…As usual, the women will go 6K with the men slated for 8K.
The Tritons will be fielding full squads on both sides, the women paced by the foursome of Madison Tanner, Paige Hughes, Marie Diaz and Chia Chang and the men featuring Kellen Levy, Tanner Collins, Tareq Alwafai and Scott Acton among a very deep group…Defending the Classic titles will not be easy for either team as perennial west region kingpin Chico State is making its first appearance at the race in several years…For all things Cross Country, click here.
CAL BAPTIST, SOCAL TOURNEY ON TAP FOR MEN’S WATER POLO
Hoping to rebound from a one-sided loss to No. 1 UCLA last Friday at home, the 12th-ranked Men’s Water Polo team goes on the road this Friday to tangle with Cal Baptist…The Tritons, who fell to 7-8 after dropping a 17-2 decision to the undefeated Bruins, will then go to Irvine for the annual SoCal Tournament, Saturday and Sunday, facing off against No. 4 Cal in first round play at 10:50 AM Saturday morning…The Tritons played the Golden Bears tough before losing a 13-10 contest in the season-opening Triton Invitational...Click here for more Men's Water Polo information.
Although last Friday night’s Men’s Water Polo result may not have been to Coach Denny Harper’s liking, the nearly two dozen alumni in the crowd certainly were. Those in attendance ranged from Jefferson Smith (’87), Randy Franke (’90), Jason “Turtle” Brown (’92), Kevin Smoker (2005) and Brandon Borso (2005) to 2013 grad Chris Barton.
