2013 will mark the 21st annual running of the Triton Classic, hosted by UCSD. The Triton men are looking for a three-peat of the event after claiming first place in 2011 and ‘12, the only top finishes in the history of the event. The women also finished ahead of the competition in 2011 with a first place mark before coming in third a year ago. The Triton women also won the meet in 2005. The Triton Classic is the last tune-up for UCSD before heading to the CCAA Championships in Chico.

Sophomore Paige Hughes was the top finisher for the UCSD women at the Roy Griak Invitational on Sept. 28. She clocked in at 23:18 to place 26th out of 356 runners as the top CCAA finisher and was named athlete of the week (Sept. 30) for her performance. The sophomore's time was the second-fastest ever run by a Triton on the Griak course. She led the Triton women to eighth place out of 34 teams, behind four ranked squads in No. 3 Augustana, No. 15 Minnesota Duluth, No. 20 Southwest Baptist and No. 22 Pittsburg State.

In the Midwest, the men came in fifth at the highly competitive Roy Griak Invitational. The UCSD men were led by Tanner Collins at the Griak with a 24th place finish for a time of 26:11, the best mark ever posted by any Triton on the course. Collins will be competing in his third Triton Classic, an event he dominated last season. The junior was the top finisher in 2012, leading the race from beginning to end to clock in at 26:15.

On the West Coast in San Bernardino on Sept. 28, the men grabbed a first-place finish at the 2013 Coyote Invite, while the women placed fourth. Freshman Brendan Gee powered UCSD to victory. His mark of 26:19 was the best of all 41 runners in the event.

The UCSD men’s squad is featured in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) national poll at No. 17. The Tritons are one of three CCAA schools in the rankings, as Chico State is tabbed at No. 5 and Cal Poly Pomona is ranked No. 19. In the USTFCCCA regional polls, the men moved up two spots to No. 3 while the women still grasp the No. 5 ranking in the West.

This season's rosters feature many student-athletes from the San Diego area. The men's list includes Carlos Bojorquez (San Diego/Kearny HS), Brendan Gee (Rancho Bernardo/Rancho Bernardo HS), Mike Kloha (San Diego/Westview HS) and Matt Lenehan (San Diego/Torrey Pines HS). Women hailing from San Diego County include Raelene Dearmas (Chula Vista/Bonita Vista Senior HS), Isabella Gallo (San Diego/Westview HS), Paige Hughes (San Diego/Valhalla HS), Michelle Le Roux (San Diego/Rancho Bernardo HS), Ella Verhees (San Diego/Point Loma HS) and Amanda Weber (San Diego/Westview HS).

Five Tritons earned captain roles this season, including juniors Alia Bales and Anneke Kakebeen and senior Ximena Cruz on the women's side, as well as seniors Mario Flores and Kellen Levy for the men.

Seven Tritons will be serving dinner at OVT and Goody’s tonight! Head over at 6 p.m. for some grub and meet runners Daniel Hauptman, Tanner Collins, Chanan Batra, Anneke Kakebeen, Chandler Colquitt, Maggie Goodson and Amanda Weber. For more information, watch the promo video by clicking here.
